The decision has prompted the City of London Corporation, the body that runs London's financial district, to "press pause" overnight on its own plans to force the anti-capitalist protest camp to disband, it said Tuesday afternoon. Corporation official Stuart Fraser said that the move would allow it to support the cathedral and give time for reflection. "We're hoping to use a pause -- probably of days, not weeks -- to work out a measured solution," he said. In its statement, St. Paul's said the decision to halt the legal action against the camp had been unanimous and followed meetings with the Bishop of London, Dr. Richard Chartres. The resignation Monday of the Dean of St. Paul's, the Right Rev. Michael Colclough, canon pastor of St. Paul's, told CNN the cathedral decided to suspend the legal action so it could engage with the protesters in "honest debate" and find ways to work together to highlight social injustice. Protester Tanya Paton, who was at a meeting with church leaders Tuesday morning, told CNN she was delighted by the cathedral's decision. It meant the two groups being "able to come together in a forum where we can work on the actual issues without being distracted by an eviction," she said, saying there was much expertise on both sides. The activists had no intention of maintaining their tent camp forever, she added, but they did want to see real progress in bringing issues of social and economic injustice to the attention of decision-makers. St. Paul's had come under fire after it said Friday, following discussions with the Corporation, that it would turn to the courts to try to remove around 200 tents from the square outside its main entrance. Three clergy have resigned from the cathedral in the past week over its handling of the situation. In Tuesday's statement, the bishop of London said: "The alarm bells are ringing all over the world. St. Paul's has now heard that call. "Today's decision means that the doors are most emphatically open to engage with matters concerning not only those encamped around the Cathedral but millions of others in this country and around the globe." The bishop has asked investment banker Ken Costa to "spearhead an initiative reconnecting the financial with the ethical," with the support of figures within London's financial world, the Church of England and the public sphere. Canon Chancellor Giles Fraser, who resigned from St. Paul's last week amid concerns that plans to evict the protesters could lead to violence, will be among those involved, the statement said. Announcing his own resignation four days later, Knowles said his position was "becoming untenable" following days of debate over the demonstrations. The Occupy London protesters said their cause had never been directed at the cathedral staff, but was about "social justice, real democracy and challenging the unsustainable financial system that punishes the many and privileges the few." The activists set up camp outside St. Paul's just over two weeks ago when their attempt to storm the nearby London Stock Exchange failed. Los Angeles (CNN) -- Dr. Conrad Murray announced in court Tuesday that he will not testify in his involuntary manslaughter trial. Murray paused and looked at each of his lawyers for several seconds before telling the judge, "My decision is that I will not testify in this matter." His decision to remain silent brought to an end the defense case in the trial of Michael Jackson's doctor, setting the stage for closing arguments on Thursday. Lawyers have been given Wednesday off from court to prepare their arguments. A Michael Jackson fan was removed from the courthouse after yelling "Murderer, Murderer" at Murray as he walked down the hallway during a recess late Tuesday morning. Jackson fans lined both sides of the hallway and held hands as members of Jackson's family walked past at the end of the morning session. The prosecution contends that Murray's use of the surgical anesthetic propofol to treat Jackson's insomnia in his home deviated from the standards of care expected of a doctor so egregiously that it made him criminally responsible for Jackson's death. If Murray had decided to tell jurors his version of what happened the day the world's biggest pop star died under his care, it would have been at the risk of intensive cross-examination by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney David Walgren. Walgren proved his cross-examination skills again Monday in a fiery battle with Dr. Paul White over the defense anesthesiology expert's theory that Jackson died from drugs he gave himself. White completed his testimony Tuesday morning. White's bruises in his battle with Walgren on Monday included a contempt-of-court citation and a $1,000 fine after he ignored repeated warnings from Pastor not to refer to his personal conversations with Murray. Walgren insisted that White answer his questions based only on what he knew from Murray's interview with police, not what Murray told him privately. It otherwise would have been a way for the defense to introduce statements from the defendant without him having to testify. "Nice try," Pastor told the defense as he ruled they couldn't do that. Walgren spent much of Monday trying to discredit what White said during his testimony Friday, and getting the defense expert to support the prosecution's argument that Murray's treatment of Jackson was reckless. White conceded that Murray deviated from the standards of care, but he would not agree that they were so "egregious and extreme" that they make Murray criminally responsible for Jackson's death. Murray's deviations were "perhaps between minor and serious, but it's not extreme," he said. Walgren also was successful in getting White to agree that he would not have done what Murray did -- take the job of sedating Jackson nearly every night at home with propofol. "No amount of money" could get him to take the job, White said. "Absolutely not," he testified. "That would be a job I would never consider accepting." The prosecution contends greed led Murray to leave his medical practice and put his ethics aside to serve as Jackson's private doctor for $150,000 a month. But the biggest battle between Walgren and White was fought over the competing theories of how Jackson died and the scientific evidence that supports them. The Los Angeles County coroner ruled that Jackson's June 25, 2009, death was caused by "acute propofol intoxication" in combination with two sedatives. White concluded that the level of drugs found in Jackson's stomach, blood and urine, convinced him that Jackson died after he rapidly injected himself with propofol on top of a large dose of lorazepam he swallowed hours earlier. Shafer, the prosecution's propofol expert, concluded the "only scenario" that fits the scientific evidence is that Jackson was on a constant intravenous drip of propofol for three hours before his death. Shafer also testified that Murray must have also injected Jackson with a series of large doses of lorazepam, a sedative, hours before his death. White theorized that Jackson could have "pushed" the drug into an catheter in his leg using a syringe over a 15- to 30-second period, much faster than a doctor would have done. "I believe it could potentially have lethal consequences," White testified. Under cross-examination Monday, White said he believed Jackson used the same syringe Murray had loaded with propofol an hour earlier to give Jackson a 25-milligram injection. Murray filled it with 50 milligrams initially, leaving it half-filled in Jackson's bedroom, under White's theory. White ruled out the possibility that Murray would have injected the fatal dose unless "he wanted to potentially harm Mr. Jackson." Walgren asked White whether he thought Jackson intended to harm himself. "I don't think he realized the potential danger," White replied. The defense contends Jackson was desperate for sleep, fearing his comeback concerts would be canceled if he missed another rehearsal from lack of rest. Walgren pressed White for an opinion about Murray's decision to leave Jackson alone with a syringe of propofol, considering he should have known Jackson had "pushed" a syringe of propofol before. "No, I would not leave the room," he said. The massive take-down of the drug trafficking network in Arizona included arrests of both Mexican and U.S. suspects, law enforcement officials said Monday. Immigration and Customs Enforcement which led the 17-month investigation said it would provide detailed information at a news conference later Monday in Phoenix. Sources familiar with the operation confirmed federal, state and local law enforcement officials seized thousands of pounds of marijuana, cocaine and heroin worth hundreds of millions of dollars in a series of raids. They also seized large caches of weapons and ammunition. The drugs were smuggled from Mexico across the border into Arizona by air and ground transportation using a variety of sophisticated techniques, the officials said. The search continues for more suspects in the case. Utilities throughout the region reported significant progress in restoring power, but the cold, snowy conditions and house-by-house nature of the damage was slowing the work, officials said. The weekend storm prompted emergency declarations from the governors of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts, and also put Halloween trick-or-treating plans in jeopardy. At least six Massachusetts cities have postponed the annual ritual, Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said. One of them, Worcester, Massachusetts, asked residents to postpone celebrations until Thursday, when temperatures are expected to climb to 60 degrees. Trick-or-treating, the city said, would "put families and our youth in harm's way as they negotiate piles of snow and downed limbs." Murray and Connecticut Gov. Daniel Malloy said they were leaving it up to city officials in their states whether to cancel festivities for Monday night. Massachusetts Gov. Forty-eight passengers were stuck in an Amtrak train for nearly 13 hours when a rock slide blocked the tracks late Saturday night, the transit service said. A bus was later sent to pick up the passengers. "The noise of the branches when they were falling and hitting the windows, they made us all sit in the aisle seats," Ann Amphlett, a passenger, told CNN affiliate WHDH. Airline passengers left stranded by the storm spent a restless weekend night on cots or airport floors. "Whatever kind of system they had, it completely and utterly broke down," said passenger Fatimah Dahandari, who spent a night in Hartford, Connecticut's, Bradley International Airport while trying to get to New York. "It looks like a refugee camp in here." Passenger Mara Dhaerman was also stranded in Hartford and said her JetBlue flight, initially from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Newark, New Jersey, spent nine hours on the tarmac in Connecticut. Passengers were told the plane was refueling, then de-icing, and that it was going to try to get back to Newark, but eventually a stairway was brought in and firefighters and troopers helped passengers off. She said she received a cot to sleep on about 1 a.m. Sunday. "It's just very annoying," she said. Passengers stuck on jet for hours As of Monday, authorities were attributing at least eight deaths to the storm. Three people died in Massachusetts, Patrick said, including a Lunenberg, Massachusetts resident who died in a fire and a resident of Hatfield, Massachusetts who succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning, apparently from an improperly vented generator. The third death happened in Springfield, Massachusetts, when a man in his 20s ignored police barricades surrounding downed power lines and touched a metal guard rail, which was charged, said city fire department spokesman Dennis Legere. Three people died in Pennsylvania -- two of them in a crash Sunday on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, CNN affiliate KYW-TV reported. The third death happened in Temple, Pennsylvania, where an 84-year-old man was resting in his recliner on Saturday when a part of a large, snow-filled tree fell into his house and killed him, according to a state police report. With numerous downed trees in the area, rescue crews took two hours to safely remove the victim, police said. At least two people died in Connecticut, Malloy said. Those who refused were handcuffed and arrested. Authorities in Portland, Oregon, and Austin, Texas, say protesters were trespassing and violating city rules. Demonstrators say authorities were infringing on protesters' rights to assemble. Police arrested more than two dozen people who refused to leave a park in northwest Portland, Oregon, after warnings that the park closed at midnight, police said. Authorities in Portland "gave protesters numerous opportunities to simply walk away or choose to be arrested," Mayor Sam Adams told CNN affiliate KPTV. "This tonight was, I think, an unnecessary confrontation that we worked really hard to minimize," he said. Occupy Portland offered a different take. "Six mounted police and approximately 65 police in riot gear pushed supporters to the sidewalks and conducted the arrests over a period of several hours," the group said in a statement. A Twitter post from the group as police entered the park said, "This is what a police state looks like." Police also arrested 38 people in Austin, Texas, who had set up a table with food and other items outside City Hall two days after the city issued rules saying food tables at the event must be put away between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. When the group was asked to leave the area, the 38 refused and were arrested, police said. "A number of individuals decided to try to prevent the police from taking the food table, so they formed a ring around it. That's when they (police) started pulling people out arresting them," Occupy Austin member Ronnie Garza told CNN affiliate YNN. Group members questioned the legitimacy of the city's new guidelines, saying they were not passed by a City Council vote, YNN reported. "These were arbitrary rules that came from City Hall which is what spurred people to resist in a non-violent way," Garza said. Austin Police Chief Aft Acevedo told YNN police were doing their jobs. "We steam clean the plaza for health and safety reasons three times a week. The Occupy Austin members have always been very cooperative," he said. "Tonight, it looks like a few people decided to exercise civil disobedience and have been arrested." Austin police arrested four more people Sunday afternoon, according to officer Dennis Farris. Of the 38 arrested earlier, he said they are in the process of being released. If they return to the protest, they will be given "every opportunity to leave," said Farris. "We're going to bend over backwards." Demonstrators across the country are protesting corporate greed and corruption. Many say the nation's wealthiest 1% hold inordinate sway over the remaining 99% of the population. Scores of protesters have been arrested nationwide during the weeks-long "Occupy" movement. On Friday, police said 51 demonstrators in San Diego, California, were arrested for various charges, including encroachment, unlawful assembly, illegal lodging and/or some form of obstruction of officers. Three others were arrested on similar charges in Tampa, Florida, according to a police statement. In Atlanta, police arrested demonstrators at a downtown park overnight Tuesday. The arrests came after Mayor Kasim Reed said he sent ministers to the park "to see if we can find a way to resolve this amicably." In Nashville, Tennessee, authorities arrested more than two dozen protesters overnight Saturday, after they again defied a curfew imposed by the state's governor. Twenty-six people received citations for trespassing, while two others were cited for public intoxication, according to Tennessee public safety spokeswoman Dalya Qualls. On Thursday, Oakland, California, Mayor Jean Quan apologized for authorities' confrontations with demonstrators, who were tear-gassed. The clashes led to the hospitalization of an Iraq war veteran. Marine veteran Scott Olsen suffered a skull fracture Tuesday night after allegedly being struck by a tear gas canister in Oakland, according to witnesses. Despite recent crackdowns against demonstrators nationwide, the loosely defined "Occupy" movement does not appear to be losing steam. In New York, where the Occupy movement was born, protesters braved snow, sleet and rain during an unusually early snowstorm in the Northeast this weekend. Activist Angela Davis addressed the crowd on Sunday, stressing the importance of taking time to build real community. "I'm persuaded that this is the beginning of something really wonderful, really vast, really great. Dow Jones Industrial Average Climbs 132 Points: Financials Perform Well

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 132.67 points, or 1.24 percent, to 10,944.41, as of 1:42 p.m. today, leading a Wall Street comeback.

The markets rallied more than 2 percent, as traders capitalized on beaten down stock prices.

They were also anticipating the Federal Reserve's monetary policy statement later today, Fox News reports.

The S&P 500 climbed 20.87 points, or 1.86%, to 1,140.33. The Nasdaq Composite jumped 61.35 points, or 2.6%, to 2,418.97.

The FOX 50 had a jump of 13.16 points, or 1.62%, to 827.34.

The financial sector, which took the biggest battering in the prior session, was among the biggest gainers on Tuesday.

Most notably, large banks like Bank of America, which had a gain of 6.44 percent, Citigroup, climbed 29.85 points, or an increase of 6.80 percent.

Similarly, JPMorgan Chase experienced a respectable jump of 2.85 percent, reports Fox News.

The energy, materials and industrial sectors all posted better than 2 percent gains in morning trading as well.

Big-name technology companies performed well, with Apple at 365.99 points after a 3.62 percent increase and Google’s 2.74 percent gain giving it 561.00 points.

Ebay was at 28.89 points following an increase of 7.20 percent, sending the technology-heavy Nasdaq edging close to 3 percent.

LG Portable Air Conditioner Installation was a Cool Breeze

With temperatures in the upper 90s earlier this week we finally broke down and purchased a portable air conditioner. Unlike our other window air conditioners this one stands up on the floor and resembles R2D2. The specific model is an LG LP0910WNR 9000BTU Portable Air Conditioner. The unit outputs 9000 BTUs and can cool 300 square feet of living space. It has multiple fan speeds and has a programmable 24 hour on-off timer. My wife actually purchased it and hooked it up in about 30 minutes. The exhaust vent pipe assembly mounted easily in a window. Standard window air conditioners on the other hand can take an hour or more to install and typically need installation brackets. In addition, since this air conditioner is portable we can move it easily to other places within our home with little effort.

We’ve used our new portable air conditioner heavily over the past several days and it has worked like a charm keeping our kitchen cool and comfortable. So if you’re in need for a cool summer breeze within your home you may want to take a look at this air conditioner.

Perhaps it's a sign of the times, but to this point, the year's most buzzed about romantic comedies have been, well, decidedly lacking on the romance.

First, Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman did their best to swear off any emotional ties in a purely carnal relationship in "No Strings Attached," and next weekend, Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis will give the physical-only a shot in "Friends With Benefits." Without passing judgments on those sorts of relationships -- though, ultimately, both films do -- they are not likely to be classic first date movies (unless a message is looking to be sent by the one buying the tickets).

For those hopeless romantics out there, though, comes welcomed news. In the form of Ryan Gosling's abs.

Gosling plays a ladies' man who becomes mesmerized by the magnetic charm of Emma Stone in the upcoming romcom "Crazy, Stupid, Love.," which co-stars Steve Carell as the mourning half of a doomed marriage with Julianne Moore. From previews, Carell's heartbreak over Moore is exactly the tonic those already in a relationship need.

Google+ The New Social Networking

or years now, I’ve been wondering why Google hadn’t made a proper social networking play. Aside from search and advertising, look at its services: Gmail, Blogger, YouTube, Docs, Sites, Maps, Calendar, Shopping, Picasa (picture storage), Picnik (picture editing), Groups, Books, Scholar, Questions, its Chrome OS and browser, not to speak of the Android OS for cellphones, some developed on its own, some from acquisitions. Put them together, and you pretty much have all you need. Except that Google seemed reluctant to put them together.

Instead, we saw Wave, which didn’t exactly disturb the waters, Buzz, a sort of Twitter me-too, which soldiers on obscurely in a tab in our inboxes, and most recently, the +1 button, which works like Facebook’s ‘Like’ button.

Now, finally, the search behemoth is in, with the Google+ Project, launched on June 28 in a ‘limited field trial.’

G+, as we’ve already abbreviated it, requires a free Google ID, which is easily got usually, but not exclusively, by signing up for Gmail. If you use a Google service, you would have noticed some changes, most notably a slim black bar that runs across the top of your browser window with, on the left, the G-products you use and, on the right, your settings and a link to your profile. G+ launches from that bar, and keeps you updated with a discreet icon that turns red when you have new G+ notifications, visible even when you’re using other G-services.

G+’s most visible feature, Circles, operates like Facebook’s little-used Lists: You sort people you follow into Circles; you can then post messages to, or share things (links, video, photographs) with individuals privately, selected Circles or combinations of Circles, or make ‘public’ posts or sharings that can be found by anyone on the Web. No Facebookian walled garden. The other big difference from Facebook: It is asymmetric; you don’t have to ‘friend’ someone to follow or message them (“Hi Larry Page! Hi Sergei Brin!” don’t count on them replying, though), but you can block or be blocked. Which is Twitteresque, but then it’s much more than Twitter, with granular control over who you share with, plus lots more power, flexibility and user-friendliness. Like Sparks, which throws up fresh content for you on subjects you’re interested in (which you can then ‘+1’). G+ also plays nice with handhelds: Huddle lets you exchange messages via your phone with groups that you assemble on the fly; and Hangouts — a big hit already — is a group video chat application with little conceits like automatically enlarging the visual of the person speaking, with the video adjusting to bandwidth and device limitations. (Caveat: Huddle isn’t private. Anyone with your Huddle link can join in.)

Some limitations are already visible and annoying. Personal URLs are long: 21 numerals after the base http://plus.google.com/, impossible for most to remember. But the ecosystem is finding ways: Within days you could get shortened vanity URLs that redirected to G+ pages (I’m gplus.to/griff). Then, Google sternly says that companies shouldn’t set up IDs, G+ is only for real people. Naturally, a number of organisations are blithely ignoring that injunction. (Proving Google hasn’t really anticipated what users will want. Marketers will kill to be where their audiences are.) And there’s the requirement to use a real name, which runs counter to Google’s much-trumped support for anonymity and pseudonymity.

But the big deal here is in the naming: This is the Google+ Project, part of a much bigger plan, a reshaping of the Google experience and really, of Google itself. No longer does Google want to send you on your way after your search results; now, they’re betting the company on keeping you engaged, tearing you away from the world’s biggest time sink: Facebook.

Google hasn’t said when the rest of the world can jump in, but rumour is that should be by end-July. Which, in Internet time, is an aeon, so don’t be surprised if it’s public by the time you read this.

New SpongeBob Adventure Gets the Twitter Treatment

Who lives in a #pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants has officially gone Web 2.0 with an original, multi-day cartoon promotion that's been created exclusively for Twitter, Nickelodeon said Thursday.

"SpongeBob's fan base is so broad that about a third of its audience is adults, so we wanted to extend the show's magic to new places like Twitter so those fans can experience it," said Nickelodeon senior vice president Roland Poindexter in a statement.

"SpongeBob is already a big deal in the social media space, with 25 million Facebook fans, and we hope his Twitter debut will drum up some extra excitement for all the people who love him and the show."

The cable network and the creators of the absorbent, yellow, and porous sponge have teamed up with the social messaging site to unleash "The Ice Race Cometh: A Twitter-Tale" through a series of tweets and images running from July 12-15.

The Twitter promotion will "set scenes and advance the action involving SpongeBob and his friends as they prepare for The Bikini Bottom Great Sleigh Race" and serve as a prequel to the new, prime-time SpongeBob cartoon "Frozen Face Off," which airs on Nickelodeon on July 15 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

Nickelodeon also turned to social media earlier this year with the January premiere of SpongeBob's "Trenchbillies" episode on Facebook ahead of its first television airing. SpongeBob currently has more Facebook fans than The Beatles, according to the network, which by extension would also make the affable cartoon character bigger than another popular historical figure Nickelodeon chose not to name.

The Dark Knight Rises won’t be realeased until summer 2012, but sneak peeks are already starting to come out!

Earlier this week, we got a look at the teaser poster, and now a teaser trailer has been released for the highly-anticipated “epic conclusion” to Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy.

The new and seemingly official video gives a little taste at what we can expect — and also gives a first glimpse of Anne Hathaway in Catwoman form.

It shows the backlash of the damage the Joker has done to Batman/Bruce Wayne and we even get to see a little bit of the new villain, Bane (Tom Hardy).

A Walk in the Woods With Mark Zuckerberg

You might think a long quiet walk through the woods with Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, is a treat only his closest friends and dearest family get to enjoy. Yet a chummy stroll with one of the richest men in the world is actually reserved for a few select potential Facebook employees.

Although the hiking path is often the same, through a wooded area of Palo Alto that skirts Stanford University, those invited change each time.

Several people who have been courted by Mr. Zuckerberg told the same story. The 27-year-old chief executive surprises them with the idea of a walk through the woods. A little startled by the invite, people often agree, and are then led across the Facebook parking lot where they eventually end up hiking along a trail that reaches a Silicon Valley lookout. This is where Mr. Zuckerberg delivers his pitch.

The individuals who shared these stories asked not to be named as they were asked to sign a nondisclosure agreement with Facebook during the interview process. Facebook did not respond when asked if this was a regular practice by Mr. Zuckerberg when trying to hire high-level employees.

An intimate walk with Facebook’s founder is of course a rarity in the competitive battle to work for the company. Getting a job at Facebook is considered one of the top career moves in Silicon Valley. Potential employees go through a long and arduous interview process that includes an online application, phone interviews and then in-person sessions with more Facebook employees and managers.

But a handful of rock-star engineers and designers get to leapfrog that entire process.

A potential employee who took a walk with Mr. Zuckerberg earlier this year said the encounter began with a very unexpected e-mail.

“I opened my e-mail one morning and there was a message from Mark Zuckerberg. I almost choked on my coffee,” said the person. “He asked me to come down to the Facebook campus in Palo Alto to discuss possibly working for the company.”

When the visitor arrived, he met Mr. Zuckerberg in his office, and was then immediately whisked away to the wooded trail. More than one potential employee who experienced the same encounter said the entire experience was “pretty disorienting.”

“Zuckerberg said money wasn’t an object and that if I wanted the job — and why wouldn’t I, he questioned — the paperwork was already ready to go back at the office,” said the person, who ran a small start-up Mr. Zuckerberg was trying to acquire. “The entire experience was totally surreal. I really felt like I was on a date.”

Another person who was taken on the same walk last year said that when they arrived at the end of the trail, they were confronted with an amazing view of Palo Alto. There, Mr. Zuckerberg stood and explained the technological history of the area.

“He pointed out Apple’s headquarters, then Hewlett-Packard and a number of other big tech companies,” the individual explained. “Then he pointed to Facebook and said that it would eventually be bigger than all of the companies he had just mentioned, and that if I joined the company, I could be a part of it all.”

The popular and sexy bisexual television personality, Tila Tequila, is planning a big comeback at the end of June. She has been silent about what her comeback will entail, but she is hoping to make up with her former fans. She is launching a new website, has created a new twitter account and is ready to re-enter the limelight, despite losing millions of fans late last year.

Tila was under fire for making rude comments in an online ustream episode. Tila offended people as she took off her clothes and posed naked, stating "people call me an attention whore - but excuse me, I'm a grown woman." She continued to state she is confident in herself, her naked body and her lesbianism. She also stated that she thought the female body was a thing of beauty and that is why she is a lesbian. Tila Tequila ended by stating that anyone in denial of gays and homosexuality is purely in denial.

Many fans, both religious and atheist, stopped following her on her social media sites and many started attacking Tila's fan pages and twittehttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifr accounts. Tila is known for her show on MTV show A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila. The show focused on Tila's journey to find love, as she dated both men and women.

The comeback is not necessarily welcomed by former Tila fans. As early as this morning, fans continued to make negative comments about Tila, calling her vulgar names for her actions and lack of consideration. As of now, Tila only has less than 1000 followers on twitter, which is nothing compare to her former following of 2 million people.

Tetris Alarm Clock

Here’s our weekly quota for an unusual and complicated alarm clock, courtesy of Instructables member / Arduino enthusiast / geeky torturer Nolte919. His alarm clock requires the user to play a game of Tetris and clear not one, but four lines on the tiny screen before it turns off the alarm.

When you’ve used up the preset number of snoozes, the game fires up. As you might have guessed, you’ll have to turn the clock sideways in order to play the game. It may not take a genius to play Tetris, but because each level is randomly generated it just might be enough to fire up your neurons and really wake you up.

Speaking of presets, this being an alarm clock made by a geek for geeks, it has a dizzying array of customizable parameters, from the brightness of the backlight to the number of times you can activate snooze. There are also four game modes of Tetris to choose from, but the geekiest feature of them all? Being able to set the alarm time down to the hundredths of a second.

If it looks like Nolte919 created the clock from scratch, it’s because he did – from the basic electronic components to the software. This is probably one of the more advanced projects I’ve ever featured here. Sony planning redesign of PlayStation Network

Sony is planning a redesign of its online gaming network, the PlayStation Network (PSN), following a hacking attack that brought the network down for nearly a month, according to reports.

The original layout for the PSN and the PlayStation store was heavy in text and had a lot of information on the screen. The new look is more streamlined with bigger images and more accessible information, according to the report. It will be similar to the streamlined design of Microsoft’s online gaming network, Xbox Live, according to the report.

Sony’s online network is a critical service that competes with Microsoft’s Xbox Live online gaming service among others. There are also 948 games now available in the PlayStation Network store, as well as 4,000 pieces of add-on content for games.

Sony’s PSN was offline for 24 days in the United States, and longer in other countries. The company took the PSN down after hackers were able to break in and steal sensitive information about more than 100 million customers. Sony laid indirect blame for the PSN’s downtime on hacktivist group Anonymous, which typically rallies a group of loosely connected hackers under moral or political banners.

PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable owners were unable to download new content for their games and play online with other players. The downtime came at a critical time for two major releases — Portal 2 and Mortal Kombathttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif, both of which prominently featured online play and had received a good deal of critical acclaim.

Sony offered PSN users free games and a whole batch of other welcome-back goodies — like free subscriptions to the company’s premium PlayStation Plus version of the PSN — to entice players to continue using the PSN. The packages will probably appease a large number of console and handheld gaming device owners. But a lot of gamers — myself included — already own those Triple-A titles, and find they aren’t really worth as much as they used to be.

Martina McBride‘s new single, ‘I’m Gonna Love You Through It,’ is another strong and moving song from the powerhouse singer that her fans have really grown to love. The moving ballad about a woman battling cancer was written by Ben Hayslip, Jimmy Yeary and Yeary’s wife, Sonya Isaacs.

“This was probably the first song I’ve ever written [about cancer],” Hayslip tells Taste of Country. “Sonya had the idea when she came in that day. Sonya’s mom had breast cancer and fought a hard battle through it. We started on this song, and we actually called Sonya’s mom on the phone and put her on speaker phone. We probably talked to her for a good 45 minutes, just about what she went through and how Sonya’s dad handled it.”

“She dropped the phone and burst into tears / The doctor just confirmed her fears / Her husband held it in and held her tight / Cancer don’t discriminate or care if you’re just 38 / With three kids who need her in their lives / He said, ‘I know that you’re afraid and I am, too / But you’ll never be alone, I promise you,’” McBride sings in the emotional opening verse of the song.

“The song is about a couple [saying] ‘We’re going to get through this together,’” notes Hayslip. “It’s not just the woman, but the man, too … ‘I’m gonna love you through it.’”

“When you’re weak, I’ll be strong / When you let go, I’ll hold on / When you need to cry, I swear that I’ll be there to dry your eyes / When you feel lost and scared to death, like you can’t take one more breath / Just take my hand, together we can do this / I’m gonna love you through it,” McBride belts in the chorus.

“It’s one of the realest songs that I’ve ever written,” says Hayslip. “I was sitting there tearing up listening to her mom talk. I’ve never had anybody in my family go through breast cancer, knock on wood, but just to hear her story … It was unbelievable. The stuff that she had to go through to stay alive. I think it’s a big song, and I think it’s a real song. Hopefully this song can change lives. Most of the time, we try to write fun, up-tempo, feel-good songs, but this one is actually going to touch a lot of lives I think.”

U.S. Pocket Reference ($1.99)

This app puts all the fine details and documents of U.S. politics in your pocket. Contents include a copy of the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights and other amendments, the Emancipation Proclamation, how the different branches of the U.S. government works, information on landmarks, lyrics to national songs and more. It's a great reference for students, those new to the U.S. or those wanting to brush up on their American history.

Wave a sparkler without burning your fingers. This app will let you create your own sparkler from an array of colors. When it comes time for fireworks, you can wave your iPhone instead of a little stick. You can save and share your customized sparkler and even set your own patriotic music to it.

Speaking of fireworks, if you can't make it to one of the big displays in your area, you can create your own for your iPhone or iPad. It's not Independence Day without the music of John Philip Sousa and other soul-stirring marches. If there's one near you, it's a great time to take in a drum and bugle corps show. Summer is the high season for this activity as drum corps around the nation compete leading up to the annual Summer Music Games in August, this year in Indianapolis. Phantom Regiment, founded in 1956, is one of the top drum corps in the world. Its app has current and historic videos of the corps, lists of events and more. Phantom isn't the only drum corp to have an app. Check to see if your local drum corps has a listing on iTunes.

Coleman Camping Cookbook and Meal Planner (Free)

This weekend is a favored one for having a picnic or camping out while taking in fireworks and outdoor concerts. Coleman, known for its line of grills and camping equipment, has a free app that allows you to plan an outdoor meal based on the ingredients at hand and the method of preparation. There's a number of recipes within the app, and you can add your own. You also can generate a grocery list based off the recipes and a list of equipment needed. You can have the app generate menus for you based on the length and number of people on your trip.

Face the fact – your blog needs to be regularly updated to maintain its readership! Hence, you must always find fresh topics to write about, and we’re going to discuss how to do just that in this article.

We have discussed how to write attractively, so now we are going to discuss what we are going to write on. The very first option that I think a blogger should write on is a topic that he or she feels passionate and interested in. You’ve chosen to make blogging your career because you want to escape a mundane job – forcing yourself to write about something that you’re not interested in is as torturous as as your mundane job!

The other reason I ask you to write about something you’re passionate about is because your feelings and emotion shows through your writings! If you feel indifferent to a certain subject but still write about it just for the sake of it, your readers will notice it. Remember the advice about writing with a personality? Forcing yourself to write will not establish a welcoming style at all.

Once you have chosen your main theme, start posting to your blog about it and make it a habit to post at least once every day, even if it’s only a comment on the newspaper article you read today. Think of yourself as a gigantic train. It takes a lot of effort to get you moving. First, you might just budge an inch, and later trudge slowly on until you finally reach your full speed. Then, it’ll take a lot of effort to stop you instead!

However, no matter how well you know your topic, your brain is bound to get exhausted over some time, so here are methods to brainstorm for content for your blog.

1) The very best way to brainstorm is to see what other bloggers have to say about stuff happening in your field of discussion. And the very best way to find related blogs is to use http://blogsearch.google.com/ or www.technorati.com. There are other decent search tools too, you just have to look around. From other blogs, you can gather more knowledge on your subject and you can also comment on what others have to say on your own blog!
2) Once you’ve established contacts with other bloggers in your field, you’ll have quite an unexhaustible “conversation” ongoing, so you’ll not need to actively search for content to write about. However, if you’re still stuck, search for news articles related to your niche in the local newspaper or online through sites like http://news.google.com and http://news.yahoo.com.
3) You can also have conversations with people with the same interest as you in the particular niche you choose, so you will eventually build up a bank of questions and answers and interesting discussions to write about in your blog. To do this, join forums related to your niche, but don’t join every forum there is out there. Stick with one or two with the biggest number of members or the one which is most focused on your niche. This will also come in handy much later in gaining traffic and generating profits.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Intel Corp is set to win EU approval next week for its $7.68 billion purchase of security software maker McAfee Inc after offering more concessions to ease antitrust concerns, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said on Thursday.

The company has already secured clearance from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to acquire McAfee, the world's No. 2 purveyor of anti-virus software after Symantec Corp. McAfee's other competitors include Finland's F-Secure, and German companies Avira and G Data.

Intel, the world's No. 1 chipmaker, had offered some concessions to the European Commission and in recent days proposed more remedies after complaints by some of McAfee's rivals that they were inadequate, the sources said.

"The Commission's clearance is likely next week," one of the sources said.

The second source said the main element of Intel's concessions related to interoperability features that will allow products from McAfee's competitors to function on Intel products without restrictions.

Last week, Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini said the acquisition could close in the first quarter if the Commission had no more requests for information.

Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy told Reuters on Thursday that Intel expects the transaction to close "before midyear" but he would not comment on the new concessions.

The European Union regulator had been concerned that Intel might embed certain elements of McAfee's virus-fighting technology in its widely used microprocessors for personal computers, giving it an unfair competitive advantage, two other persons familiar with the case told Reuters earlier this month.

Intel's plan to buy McAfee underscores how security has become a concern in a world of Web-enabled devices.

Swallowing McAfee would give Intel the opportunity to sell high-profit security software alongside its microprocessors to its traditional PC customers.

Intel's planned acquisition of McAfee also reflects a trend in the technology sector for hardware and software companies to merge in order to offer clients one-stop solutions.

"The lines and distinctions between hardware and software are blurring -- what's being implemented in software, what's being implemented in hardware and how to bring very vast, rapidly evolving ecosystems together," said Alex Gauna, an analyst at JMP Securities.

EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia is expected to hold a news conference on Wednesday to announce the decision in the case.

Intel shares were trading 0.8 percent lower at $20.84 while McAfee was up 0.7 percent.

LONDON (Reuters) - The most perfect virtual bowler, the most swearing in a videogame and the most popular game on Facebook are just some of the records listed in the 2011 gamer's bible of wacky achievements from Guinness World Records.

The new "Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition" published on Thursday features an array of record holders from pensioners to schoolchildren, demonstrating the extent to which people from all walks of life have embraced videogames.

"Gaming has become a hugely important part of popular culture and this year's Gamer's Edition reflects just that," said Guinness World Records Gaming Editor Gaz Deaves.

The oldest gamer to make the book is 85 year-old John Bates from Onalaska, Wisconsin. The former high school principal became hooked on Nintendo's Wii Bowling and went on to achieve the Most Perfect Games on Wii Sports Bowling (2,850).

At the other end of the age spectrum is nine-year-old Ryota Wada from Tokyo, who has been recognized as the Youngest Gamer to Achieve a Perfect 'AAA' score on music videogame Dance Dance Revolution.

Mitsugu Kikai, 25, from Tokyo is recognized for having the largest collection of memorabilia related to videogame character Super Mario (5,400 individual items) and Annie Leung from San Francisco is featured for achieving the highest score on Guitar Hero 3 for a female (789,349 points).

Other records include the most swearing in a videogame, the most people to sing to a karaoke videogame and the most popular game on Facebook, which is FarmVille with 60 million monthly active users.

The book also contains the results of a poll conducted by Guinness World Records to find the best videogame character.

More than 13,000 gaming fans voted and chose Mario, the good-natured mustachioed Italian plumber as the top character.

Second spot went to Link from the popular Legend of Zelda series, and third went to the genetically engineered super soldier, Master Chief, who made his first appearance a decade ago in Halo: Combat Evolved (Microsoft, 2001).

Analysis: Hu addresses U.S. stress over China high-tech drive

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China's plan to change itself from a major manufacturer to a leading global source of innovation poses an enormous challenge for U.S. companies whose competitive edge depends on coming up with the next big idea.

Those firms may be able to breathe a little easier after China pledged during President Hu Jintao's visit to Washington this week to "delink" its indigenous innovation policies from its $88 billion-plus government procurement market.

"This issue has been one of our top advocacy priorities for the past year," said John Frisbie, president of the U.S. China Business Council, which represents more than 200 American companies that do business with China.

China's commitment is "potentially very significant" depending on how it is implemented, Frisbie said.

China's indigenous innovation drive refers to policies intended to spur its domestic firms to develop technologies and products as good as or better than those offered by the United States, Europe and Japan.

U.S. industry has feared being locked out of the vast Chinese central, provincial and local government procurement markets unless companies agree to develop and maintain their intellectual property in China.

Last January, 19 U.S. business groups representing aerospace, telecommunication, software, clean energy and other high-tech sectors put those concerns into a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Attorney General Eric Holder, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

What prompted that action was a Chinese central government proposal to establish a national catalog listing which products would be eligible for preferential treatment in government procurement contracts.

The groups told the five U.S. Cabinet officials that they were alarmed by criteria that would require products included in the catalog to contain "intellectual property that is developed and owned in China and that any associated trademarks are originally registered in China."

'NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE'

"This represents an unprecedented use of domestic intellectual property as a market-access condition and makes it nearly impossible for the products of American companies to qualify unless they are prepared to establish Chinese brands and transfer their research and development of new products to China," the groups said.

The issue also surfaced at the provincial and municipal level in China.

Shanghai issued its own catalog of innovative products in late 2009, and of "the 530 on the list only two were made by foreign-invested companies operating there," Frisbie said.

"And the two happened to be from joint ventures that had majority-Chinese ownership too," Frisbie added.

More than a year later, Shanghai has not updated its catalog -- which U.S. industry thinks illustrates the folly of using product lists to promote innovation, Frisbie said.

AMD says focused on chip launch despite CEO departure

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - PC chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc reported solid earnings and said there was no strategic shift toward the mobile market following the former CEO's recent departure.

Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert told analysts on a conference call that AMD would concentrate on rolling out its new lineup of microchips after Chief Executive Dirk Meyer abruptly left the company last week.

AMD has yet to join the race to design chips specifically aimed at the exploding market for ultramobile devices. Seifert acknowledged that was one of the reasons for Meyer's departure but he said there would be no immediate strategic swings.

"To reduce it to a 'just tablets' statement would be wrong. ... It's certainly not an indication that we're going to let the focus shift away from what the priorities are in terms of delivering what we promised," he said.

AMD said momentum for its new Fusion PC chip line, which will go head-to-head against new chips released by Intel, was strong and growing among computer manufacturers.

Sales of desktop and laptop computers have suffered in recent months due to tough economies in the United States and Europe and exploding consumer interest in smartphones and tablets.

AMD posted better-than-expected earnings for the fourth quarter and said revenue in the first quarter could be flat or down 4 percent versus the December quarter, which normally gets a boost from holiday shopping.

"It's a pretty decent report," said Wedbush analyst Patrick Wang. "The bigger question in my mind is when will they start to see the benefits of Fusion," he said, referring to AMD's new chip lineup.

Last week, Intel gave a rosy outlook for early 2011 and set an upbeat tone for quarterly earnings season, but its stock fell on concerns about its lack of competitive mobile chips.

AMD in November began shipping its Fusion microprocessors for low-end laptops, launching a product line it hopes will help it regain market share lost to Intel. Some analysts have questioned whether Meyer's abrupt departure could be disruptive to the launch of the Fusion line this year.

On a non-GAAP basis, AMD said its earnings were 14 cents a share, higher than the 11 cents per share that analysts on average expected, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Non-GAAP earnings in the fourth quarter of 2009 were 11 cents per share.

Analysts have speculated that an eventual move toward the mobile market by AMD could entail designing energy-efficient chips using an architecture licensed by ARM, which dominates the market for smartphones and laptops.

Asked about ARM technology, Seifert underscored AMD's expertise in the x86-based processors it and Intel sell.

"You have to realize the expertise and the (intellectual property) that we have in the company on x86 and (graphics) processors is broad," he said. "Those capabilities can also work on other platforms."

AMD said its revenue in the fourth-quarter of 2010 was $1.65 billion, the same as the company pre-reported last week. The figure was flat with the year ago.

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Verizon Communications took the Federal Communications Commission to court on Thursday over its recently issued Internet traffic rules, arguing the regulator had overstepped its authority.

The filing with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia fulfilled the predictions of many industry analysts that the FCC's split vote last month to impose the rules would be swiftly challenged.

Medley Global Advisors analyst Jeffrey Silva said there was a "reasonable chance" the court would strike down the rules.

The same court ruled last year that the FCC lacked the authority to stop Comcast Corp from blocking bandwidth-hogging applications on its broadband network, spurring the agency's most recent rulemaking effort.

Verizon said it was concerned by the FCC's assertion of broad authority to make new regulations on broadband Internet networks.

"We believe this assertion of authority goes well beyond any authority provided by Congress, and creates uncertainty for the communications industry, innovators, investors and consumers," Verizon deputy general counsel Michael Glover said in a statement.

A senior FCC official said Verizon appeared to be premature in making its filing since the Internet rules have not even been published yet in the Federal Register.

The agency is confident the order is legally sound, said the FCC official, who spoke on condition he was not named.

In a 3-2 vote on December 21, the FCC adopted rules that prevent network operators from blocking lawful content but still let them ration access to their networks. The agency's two Republican members voted against the measure.

The rules gave wireless service providers more leeway in managing their networks but still forbade them from blocking access to websites or competing voice and video applications.

The action highlighted a huge divide between those who say the Internet should flourish without regulation and those who say the power of high-speed Internet providers to discriminate against competitors needs to be restrained.

Even though the FCC's Internet rules have not been formally published yet, a step that would put them into effect, Verizon's appeal argued that the rules would modify wireless airwave licenses it holds.

Verizon is majority owner of Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile service.

Disputes over licenses must be filed within 30 days of the order's release, and are only heard in the D.C. circuit court.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co is shaking up a board criticized by many as dysfunctional, bringing in five new directors including former eBay chief Meg Whitman, as new CEO Leo Apotheker remakes the company.

HP's board had for years come under fire from shareholders and business leaders such as Oracle's Larry Ellison, most recently after it forced out Mark Hurd as CEO in controversial fashion.

The new directors will bring fresh thinking to the world's largest technology company by revenue, including much-needed expertise in areas such as telecommunications and international experience, the company said.

In addition to Whitman, HP named as directors Shumeet Banerji, CEO of Booz & Co; Gary Reiner, former chief information officer of General Electric Co; Patricia Russo, former CEO of Alcatel-Lucent; and Dominique Senequier, CEO of AXA Private Equity.

The technology giant said directors Joel Hyatt, John Joyce, Robert Ryan and Lucille Salhany will not stand for reelection by shareholders.

"This change was two things -- the handling of the Mark Hurd situation, which was very controversial, and that with a new CEO it makes sense to have someone new," said Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu.

Hurd was accused last June of sexual harassment by a female contractor, but a board investigation found no evidence to back that up. Hurd resigned August 6 after the board said he filed inaccurate expense reports to conceal a "close personal relationship" with that contractor, something Hurd's representatives have disputed.

The four directors leaving are doing so voluntarily, HP said. Hyatt and Joyce have been directors since 2007, Ryan since 2004, and Salhany since 2002. The changes leave HP with 13 board members.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Salhany and Ryan pushed hard for Hurd's ouster from the outset. Hyatt and Joyce were more supportive of Hurd at first but eventually went along with the unanimous decision to seek his resignation.

NEW BLOOD

Whitman is arguably the best-known of HP's new directors. At eBay, she oversaw a period of robust growth but was criticized for her acquisition of Web telephone company Skype. She recently lost out in a bid to become governor of California.

"With Leo coming in as CEO, we both thought it was appropriate to look at the board," HP Chairman Ray Lane in an interview.

Lane said Russo will bring a strong track record in the telecommunications industry, called Reiner an "iconic CIO," and lauded Banerji's and Senequier's international experience.

Gleacher & Co analyst Brian Marshall said investors should welcome the move.

"To shake it up a little bit and get some of the old-school guys out of there and get some new-school blood in there, highlighted by Meg Whitman, this is a positive development," he said.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc co-founder Larry Page will take over as CEO from Eric Schmidt, a surprise that signaled Silicon Valley's most powerful Internet company was taking the offensive against fast-moving rivals like Facebook.

Schmidt will step aside on April 4 and make way for Page -- who created the company with fellow Stanford University alumnus Sergey Brin in 1998 -- to take the reins of a company that has dominated Internet search for a decade but is in danger of losing traffic to social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

"Day-to-day adult supervision no longer needed!" Schmidt tweeted after the announcement.

Schmidt, who became CEO in 2001 to bring more management experience to a then-fledgling company, will assume the role of executive chairman, focusing on deals and government outreach, among other things. Brin will concentrate on strategic projects.

"Larry is ready. It's time for him to have a shot at running this," Schmidt told analysts on a conference call.

Shares in the Internet search and advertising leader rose about 2 percent to $639 in extended trading.

Just days ago, Apple Inc CEO Steve Jobs announced a leave of absence, leaving lieutenant Tim Cook in charge of day-to-day operations. Like Google, Apple also announced results this week that blew past Wall Street's estimates.

"The Street will think it's a negative, that there is probably some issue going on. Google is trying to get more efficient and trying to get a tech guy in the seat to compete with Facebook," said UBS analyst Brian Pitz. "I don't think it changes anything strategically where the company is headed."

News of the change came as Google reported a 29 percent surge in both net profit and net revenue that beat forecasts.

Net income, excluding items, of $8.75 a share outstripped Wall Street's average forecast of $8.10.

Net revenue, excluding fees paid to partner websites, was $6.37 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, on average, were expecting net revenue of $6.06 billion.

STREAMLINING

The world's top Internet company is recruiting and going on an acquisitions spree, aiming to ensure its online products remain popular as surfers turn to new services like Facebook -- now the most heavily trafficked website -- and wireless gadgets.

On a conference call with analysts, Google CFO Patrick Pichette said a 10 percent, across-the-board pay raise instituted late last year was a direct attempt to staunch a flow of talent to hot Web upstarts in the Valley.

Google tried to buy fast-growing online local-shopping service Groupon for $6 billion but was rebuffed, Chicago Breaking Business, a Tribune Newspaper website, and other news outlets reported.

T-Mobile USA eyes potential tower sale

NEW YORK (Reuters) - T-Mobile USA aims to fetch up to $2 billion for the sale of its broadcast cellular towers around the start of the second quarter, according to a person familiar with the process.

Funds are expected to be used for investments such as buying additional wireless airwaves. The head of T-Mobile USA's parent company Deutsche Telekom AG (DTEGn.DE) said on Thursday the company may sell its 7,000 towers.

DT Chief Executive Rene Obermann told reporters on Thursday that a tower sale could generate "significant" funding to improve the financial self-sufficiency of the No. 4 U.S. mobile service, which has been a drag on DT results.

The most likely buyers are American Tower (AMT.N) or Crown Castle. (CCI.N), according to Benchmark Co analyst Clayton Moran. Representatives of those companies were not available for comment.

However, Obermann said T-Mobile USA would sell the assets only if they fetch a good price. Proceeds would be used for investment requirements beyond its typical capital needs.

"We're definitely not in a rush," he told reporters ahead of the company's financial analyst meeting in New York, adding that a sale would depend on whether "the financials work out."

The trend in recent years has been for big U.S. operators to sell their wireless towers and rent back space in them from dedicated tower operators. Sprint Nextel (S.N) sold about 3,000 towers for $670 million in 2008.

T-Mobile USA explored a tower sale in 2007 but decided against it, saying the timing and returns were wrong.

Benchmark's Moran estimated a price range of $1.5 billion to $2 billion for the towers but said valuation would depend on such factors as whether T-Mobile USA commits to renting more tower space for a future high-speed upgrade to its service.

If it instead opts to upgrade its service via a partnership with another operator that uses different towers, it would mean less growth for a prospective buyer of the T-Mobile towers.

"It's more valuable to a tower company if T-Mobile USA is going to build out its own (high-speed) network as opposed to network sharing," Moran said.

T-Mobile USA has said it is considering expanding its access to wireless airwaves through a partnership with companies such as Clearwire (CLWR.O) or Harbinger-backed start-up LightSquared.

It is also the main bidder left in a spectrum auction Clearwire is holding.

SETS TARGETS TO RESUME GROWTH

Shares of Deutsche Telekom closed up 1.22 percent at 9.72 euros on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange after the news. Deutsche Telekom investors have complained for years about weakness at the company's U.S. unit.

Steve Jobs leaves behind deep bench of talent at Apple

Steve Jobs is the man. As the public face of Apple, the revered visionary and sometimes enfant terrible has shown an ability to dream up, fine-tune, orchestrate and then unleash game-changing technology on the world.

The announcement that he's taken a third medical leave of absence in his ongoing battle with cancer now prompts the question: What sort of Apple does he leave behind?

Beginning with Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who will once again take over the reins, as he did when Jobs took a six-month leave to have a liver transplant in 2009, Jobs has put in place a deep bench of talent. Top executives such as design guru Jonathan Ive, Apple store creator Ron Johnson and software wizard Scott Forstall have collaborated closely to give Apple its bleeding-edge product line, its soaring stock price, its spit and its polish.

Most observers say Apple is on firm footing for the foreseeable future. They include industry analysts, academics and the scores of investors who swooped in Tuesday to shore up Apple shares beaten up after initial word of Jobs' medical leave.

But there are others, including former employees and consultants who have seen the Jobs magic up close, who now worry about the long-term prospects of an Apple without a leader who can seemingly peek around the next bend and give customers devices they didn't even realize we needed.

"Steve Jobs has obviously been an iconic leader in marketing and innovation and he always

had a stiff operating hand," said Barry Jaruzelski, management consultant at Booz & Co. "But I think those same skills that have made Apple so great over the decades have been institutionalized. Jobs is a symbol of them, but those capabilities are still there; they're not just the vision of one iconic individual." The team is in place

Yet a former Apple consultant, who has worked closely with Jobs and his inner circle on numerous advertising campaigns, said that while the company should be fine in the short term without Jobs, the picture further out is much cloudier.

"His absence does worry me," said the consultant, who asked that his name not be used. "The reason Apple is so successful is because of what Jobs does and doesn't do. What he turns down is as important as what he approves. I'd see him do that on a daily basis -- 'Let's do this, but not that.' "

Jobs, he said, "has this ability to look forward and really see what trends are coming. The management team in place will not be able to do that."

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said Jobs was "irreplaceable and a visionary that no one can touch. But they have people who can come close to Steve Jobs. The collective bench can do a lot of things Steve Jobs does. The key four, five guys -- they all share the same value Steve Jobs has, which is high-integrity products and simplicity. I think Apple will continue to be phenomenally successful," even without Jobs. "But it would be even better with him. He's a cross between Henry Ford and Willy Wonka."

From Cook, the admired COO who will assume responsibilities for day-to-day operations, to his marketing chief Philip Schiller, to Apple's creative legend and top designer Jonathan "Jony" Ive, the company is in good hands, according to most observers.

"We believe Tim Cook is a proven operator and very capable of managing Apple's day-to-day operations," Chris Whitmore at Deutsche Bank Equity Research wrote in a report Tuesday. He said Apple's "product road map for the next 12 months is largely set and Cook will ensure crisp execution on that road map."

Cook, who had already effectively been manning the day-to-day operations at Apple even while Jobs was on the job, will have plenty of help. Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, has played a key role in the company's much-vaunted advertising and marketing campaigns that have ensured Apple products a place not just in the retail hit parade, but in the annals of tech history.

As senior vice president of industrial design, Ive has held center stage for Apple's parade of new launches. The longtime Apple veteran is the guy behind the mesmerizing smorgasbord of Apple gadgets. And Eddy Cue, vice president of Internet services, has been instrumental in helping Jobs work out thorny negotiations with the music companies, movie studios and publishers whose by-product comes streaming out of Apple's products.

Add in Scott Forstall, senior vice president of iPhone software, who spearheaded Apple's new mobile operating system that's in use on the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and now the Apple TV; Bob Mansfield, senior vice president of Mac hardware engineering; and Bertrand Serlet, senior vice president of software engineers, and the team that Jobs put in place seems ready for anything.

Product pipeline set

Although Jobs' leave "creates uncertainty," said Peter Misek, an analyst for Jefferies & Co., "we believe the product pipeline is set for the next two years and Apple's bench strength has come through before."

Analyst Tim Bajarin agreed: "Even with Steve not there for the day-to-day, they won't skip a beat."

"Ron Johnson, one of the best minds in retail, is running the Apple stores; Peter Oppenheimer is running their financial side," Bajarin added. "Schiller's brilliant in marketing. And Ive is legendary in the areas of design and design integration.

"Even if Jobs takes an extended leave of absence, the company will move forward. And since the products that will be introduced this year and next and even in 2013 have already been on the drawing board for years and have met with Jobs' approval, any impact on the company from his absence won't be seen, in the short-term at least."

O'Brien: The 10 most powerful women in Silicon Valley

One of the biggest criticisms about Silicon Valley is the lack of women.

Not enough female CEOs. Not enough female engineers. Not enough women on boards. Not enough women in venture capital. Not enough female entrepreneurs.

Yet by focusing on what's missing, it's easy to overlook what is here: a network of powerful women shaping the most important companies in Silicon Valley.

And so, for the first time, the Mercury News has compiled a list of the 10 most powerful women in the valley's tech industry.

In putting this list together, what I found is that many of the most powerful women aren't CEOs. They are second-in-commands, or leaders of major divisions. In fact, there is only one female CEO in the entire SV150: Yahoo's Carol Bartz.

As such, their power is different, sometimes more subtle and often exercised behind the scenes.

Padmasree Warrior, one of the women on the list and chief technology officer of Cisco Systems, argues that women think of power and influence differently than men, and in a way that might be more suited to how technology and corporations are evolving in the 21st century.

"As a leader in a technology company, I know I have a lot of responsibility and power," she said. "I'm always asking myself how I can give some of my power away to make others successful in the organization. I think men would look at it in a very different way."

Of course, any such list is inherently

subjective. I considered three factors in evaluating candidates: size of their company or organization; number of people under their management; and scope of their influence beyond their company.

Though in talking with Theresia Gouw Ranzetta, another one of the 10, I realized women might have their own way of defining power that's very different from men.

"In terms of the word 'power,' most women I know don't think of their influence in those terms," said Ranzetta, a partner at venture capital firm Accel Partners. "They talk about wanting to do good, or wanting to build an organization, or helping others succeed, or having an impact on their community."

Whatever words they might use to describe it, here are the 10 women I think wield the most power in Silicon Valley:

1. Safra Catz, 49, president, Oracle: Officially, Catz shares the title of president with Mark Hurd. But Catz is first among equals. A former investment banker, she was promoted to president in 2004 just as CEO Larry Ellison decided to consolidate the business software industry by buying other companies. Catz has largely been in charge of that campaign, which has transformed the industry and Oracle, now one of the world's largest business software companies.

But Catz also must make these deals work, and she has. In addition, she oversees Oracle's operations and is credited with giving the marching orders that have made divisions more efficient and profitable, without resorting to cost-cutting and layoffs that lesser managers might fall back on.

Catz provides consistent leadership at a company where the CEO, though larger than life, frequently disengages, spending weeks at a time at the America's Cup or on his yacht in the Mediterranean. And no one doubts that Ellison hands her the keys when he's gone.

For all those reasons, Catz is a clear choice as the most powerful woman in Silicon Valley.

2. Sheryl Sandberg, 41, chief operating officer, Facebook: If Sandberg sticks around long enough, she will give Catz a serious run for the No. 1 spot. Just not this year.

Sandberg arrived from Google in March 2008 just as Facebook was pivoting from wide-eyed startup to Internet power player. Her portfolio at Facebook includes sales, marketing, acquisitions, partnerships, human resources, public policy and communications. That essentially has left founder Mark Zuckerberg free to focus on the design of Facebook and cooking up new features.

Sandberg provided much-needed maturity to a company that had sometimes resembled a rowdy college dormitory. It was the adult supervision needed to help Facebook move from hot startup to Internet juggernaut. Thanks to Sandberg's steady hand, Facebook raced past the 500 million-user mark even as it fought off a number of privacy controversies. It has become the most important company on the Web, an achievement that's in no small part due to what she's done since she arrived.

But why isn't she the most powerful woman? While Facebook is a technology juggernaut, and a cultural force, it has not become an unstoppable business such as Oracle or Google.

That may all come in time, after its widely anticipated initial public offering. While Zuckerberg tinkers relentlessly with features and the user experience and the technology platform that makes it all work, it's Sandberg who must capitalize on Facebook's massive user base and make it the dominant Web business of the next decade.

3. Carol Bartz, 62, CEO, Yahoo: Why only No. 3? She does, after all, run what is still one of the largest networks of websites in the world.

That said, Bartz has increasingly become an object of derision, rather than respect, for her leadership. Since taking over Yahoo almost two years ago, she has operated with tremendous bluster but few clear results. Her tenure continues to be defined by what she's gotten rid of: search business, employees, various product lines.

This would be defensible if Bartz did a better job of explaining where this takes Yahoo. But she hasn't. And that isn't a trivial matter. It has undermined the confidence of investors, who have left the stock at levels so low that it remains vulnerable to wild rumors of takeovers or buyouts.

The result is less discussion about what Yahoo will do next, and more speculation about how long Bartz will remain in charge. But given that Bartz is still the only CEO among the valley's largest 150 public companies, her power remains substantial.

4. Ann Livermore, 52, executive vice president, Hewlett-Packard: Here may be one of the most confounding people on this list. More than anything, she is the ultimate survivor. She has been at HP since 1982, remarkable given the tidal wave of changes and the hundreds of thousands of layoffs over the past decade.

Livermore rose to become executive vice president of HP's Enterprise Business, which accounts for almost half of the company's revenue, under former CEO Carly Fiorina, stayed put under Mark Hurd, and is now reporting to her third CEO. If her unit, with its $57 billion in annual revenue, was its own company, it would be one of the largest tech companies in the world.

But her position may be in flux. Late Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that HP may be splitting up her duties and adding her to the company's board. Does that mean she's moving up, down or sideways? Or like some other executives, could she even be on her way out? Stay tuned.

5. Marissa Mayer, 35, vice president of geographic and local services, Google: She was one of the first 20 employees at Google and is one of its highest-profile executives aside from the founders and CEO Eric Schmidt. And she has long been seen as the guardian of the search experience and the gatekeeper for new Google products.

This year, she got a new title that demonstrated the company's commitment to local advertising. If Mayer can build this into a substantial new business for Google, she's going to be getting a lot of headhunters calling about CEO openings -- and if it's a job in Silicon Valley she'll rocket up this list.

6. Padmasree Warrior, 50, chief technology officer, Cisco Systems: Warrior made this list first for being one of the top executives at one of the valley's largest and most important companies. That she isn't even the first woman to occupy that job is a tribute to CEO John Chambers.

Warrior joined after being chief technology officer at Motorola for four years, where she gained an international reputation as one of the most influential women in technology. In fact, she was widely rumored to be a finalist to become President Barack Obama's first chief technology officer. And with nearly 1.4 million followers on Twitter, only Mayer on this list can rival the way she regularly communicates with average people around the world.

7. Katie Cotton, 45, vice president, worldwide communications, Apple: Here is a woman who possesses the greatest of all superpowers: invisibility. Cotton oversees the most powerful mythmaking organization this side of Disney. Not only does she do a masterful job of stoking the cultlike fervor for Apple products, but she's also considered to be the cultivator of Steve Jobs' image, which just might be the most valuable commodity in Silicon Valley. And she does it all while rarely appearing in public, sending reporters e-mails or getting on the phone.

8. Susan Desmond-Hellmann, 53, chancellor, UC San Francisco: In the world of biotechnology and genetics, Desmond-Hellmann was already a towering figure. She played an instrumental role in developing some of the most important cancer-fighting drugs, and then spent years as president of Genentech.

But in August 2009, she became the first female chancellor at UC San Francisco, an often-overlooked institution despite being one of the region's largest research organizations and the second-largest employer in San Francisco, with a $3 billion annual budget, 4,493 students and 22,196 employees. In her new role, she's now also overseeing the development of UC San Francisco's massive Mission Bay campus, which will include three medical and research facilities.

Her reputation in Silicon Valley is such that in her short tenure, she's already landed a $1.5 million gift from Intel's Andy Grove to create a new joint master's degree program with UC Berkeley. And this summer, UC San Francisco nabbed a $100 million donation from Salesforce.com's Marc Benioff, who cited his confidence in Desmond-Hellmann's leadership as one of the reasons for the contribution.

9. Theresia Gouw Ranzetta, 42, managing partner, Accel Partners: After almost two decades working as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist, Ranzetta has emerged as a significant player in the areas of e-commerce, social media and mobile investing. She's been at Accel since 1999, where for many years she was the sole female VC partner before it recently added a second (based in London). In addition to sitting on the boards of eight companies, she's become a mentor to countless female entrepreneurs and investors. And she's been at the center of a powerful network of women in Silicon Valley that's building support for female entrepreneurs.

10. Rep. Anna Eshoo, 68, D-Palo Alto: This may have been the single hardest call on this list. Silicon Valley is blessed with two excellent congresswomen: Eshoo, whose district stretches from Santa Cruz to San Francisco, and Rep. Zoe Lofgren of San Jose. Both advocate strongly on behalf of tech interests. And both are widely respected.

Asking people which woman ranked ahead of the other touched off some of the fiercest conversations I had in putting this list together.

That said, I gave the nod to Eshoo, who has been in the House since 1993, because she sits on two committees of vital interest to the valley: the House Energy and Commerce Committee and its subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet. She's been a longtime proponent of clean energy and innovation and also had a hand in helping some notable organizations in her district land some of the federal stimulus funding, including Tesla Motors.

A real 'Dick Tracy wristwatch' may be coming from HP

Later this year, Hewlett-Packard researchers say, they expect to deliver to the U.S. Army a working prototype of what they're calling a "Dick Tracy wristwatch" — a lightweight, wearable device that soldiers in the field can use to view digital maps and other data on a flexible plastic screen that won't shatter or crack like glass.

Though it will be spartan by design, researchers say HP's prototype could be one of the first in a new wave of products incorporating flexible electronic displays. Freed from the constraints of a rigid glass screen, designers could one day build flexible plastic displays into clothing, wall coverings and perhaps even e-readers or tablets that can roll up like a newspaper.

"You can start thinking about putting electronic displays on things where you wouldn't ordinarily think of having them," said Nick Colaneri, a scientist and director of the Flexible Display Center at Arizona State University. "How about a stack of thin displays that I can peel off and stick on things, sort of like a pad of Post-it notes?"

Long before those hit the market, however, flexible plastic displays will provide tablets, smartphones and other portable computers with big screens that weigh less and are far more durable than today's models, said Carl Taussig, director of advanced display research at HP Labs in Palo Alto.

"Unlike glass, plastic doesn't break when you drop it on the floor," said Taussig, whose employer has a vested

interest in electronic displays, as the world's biggest seller of personal computers.

Experts have long predicted a big future for flexible displays. The Defense Department has funded efforts to develop lightweight screens that soldiers can use in hostile environments. A host of computer-makers and electronics companies are working on commercial applications.

"We're quite bullish on this market," said Jennifer Colegrove, vice president for emerging technologies at DisplaySearch, an industry research and consulting firm, which estimates that sales of flexible displays will grow from $85 million in 2008 to more than $8 billion in 2018.

But technical issues have made it a long and sometimes frustrating quest. Mountain View-based Plastic Logic showed off a prototype e-reader with a flexible display last year, dubbed the "Que," only to announce later that its commercial release would be delayed indefinitely.

Standard components for liquid crystal displays, used in most portable computers today, generally require a rigid glass to keep images from being distorted. Traditional displays also depend on transistors that are embedded in glass through processes that involve temperatures high enough to melt or distort plastic.

Taussig's team at HP, however, is working with plastic film that is both lighter and thinner than glass, and which can be stored in rolls. Their method resembles, in a sense, the way newspapers are printed from giant spools of paper.

The process starts with rolls of plastic that has been treated with thin layers of metal and other material. The plastic is run through a press that imprints a microscopic, three-dimensional pattern, which can then be etched to create transistors on the film. These can transmit instructions to electrically charged particles or diodes contained in a second layer of plastic, which then displays text or images.

While it's not yet ready for commercial use, Taussig said he's convinced the roll process can be far cheaper than current "batch" methods for making glass displays, which require vast clean rooms and precision robotics to keep each pane from being damaged in production.

Other groups in Taiwan and elsewhere are developing manufacturing processes in which layers of transistors are laid down on sheets of plastic temporarily bonded to a pane of glass. Colaneri said display manufacturers could adopt that approach while using much of their existing equipment.

But eventually, Colegrove said, HP's "roll" approach may be a less expensive process for making flexible screens in large volume. Currently, she added, the cost of the glass display might be $30 to $40 for a typical e-reader like the Amazon Kindle that sells for $139.

The prototype that HP is building for the Army also takes advantage of low-power features associated with "E Ink," the technology used in most e-readers. As a result, Taussig said the device will be able to run on the power from a small, flexible solar panel that can be part of the wristband.

E Ink uses black and white particles with opposite electrical charges, floating in tiny capsules of liquid. Electrical signals cause the particles to form a pattern of letters, words or other images. The display requires little power because it has no backlighting and uses electricity only to create a new page.

While that's good for static displays, such as maps or blocks of text, Taussig said his team is also working with organic light emitting diodes, or OLEDs, to build flexible displays capable of showing color and video. That will take more time, he added, although he said HP has proved the concept with very small displays.

Other companies are working on the same goal. Samsung touted a 4.5-inch flexible prototype using OLED technology at this month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sony and LG have also shown off flexible display prototypes in recent months.

The first consumer products using flexible displays will likely have the same rigid frames as today's laptops and tablet computers, Colaneri said. Even if the screen can bend, he explained, researchers have not yet developed flexible processors and other computer components.

Next will come products with screens that are curved or molded permanently into innovative shapes, he added, while a screen you can roll up and stuff in your pocket may be several years away.

Green jobs continue to grow amid the economic downturn

California's unemployment rate has hovered around 12.4 percent for almost a year. But a new report released late Tuesday shows that green jobs continued to grow amid the downturn.

California's "Core Green Economy" had 174,000 jobs in January 2009, up from 169,000 in January 2008, according to the report by Next 10, a nonpartisan think tank founded by philanthropist and venture capitalist Noel Perry.

The Bay Area -- a hub for solar manufacturing and other clean energy generation -- continued to post the state's strongest green employment gains, adding 2,500 jobs -- half of the 5,000 statewide -- during the January 2008 to January 2009 time frame.

The bulk of the state's green jobs are in services, such as environmental consulting and green marketing. But manufacturing represents 26 percent of all green employment -- a significant share, given that manufacturing represents just 11 percent of the state's total economy.

The report, called "Many Shades of Green: Regional Distribution and Trends in California's Green Economy," is the second annual report for Next 10 prepared by Collaborative Economics of Mountain View.

The report's authors point to California's long history of forward-thinking public policy as driving much of the state's green job growth.

"We've had a renewable portfolio standard for utilities and energy efficiency requirements for buildings for years," said Perry, who started Next 10 in 2003. "The bar has

been raised here in California, and entrepreneurs and innovators are trying to reach that bar."

Job growth in the Bay Area can be found across cleantech sectors, particularly energy generation, carbon emissions monitoring, clean transportation and energy storage.

Picarro, a Sunnyvale company that makes scientific instruments to measure greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, had fewer than 50 employees last year. The headcount is now 70, and the company expects to have well more than 100 by this time next year. Palo Alto's Tesla Motors, which had about 500 employees a year ago, has well more than 800 today.

"There's a lot of excitement about energy storage," said Doug Henton of Collaborative Economics. "It's the holy grail. Everyone is trying to figure out how to develop advanced batteries and fuel cells."

Tracking green job growth can be difficult because there are several different ways to define "green jobs" and the "green economy." Collaborative Economics defines green jobs and businesses as those that conserve energy and natural resources, reduce pollution, repurpose waste and provide alternatives to carbon-based energy sources. The firm scoured employment databases and then reached out to individual companies in an effort to quantify the actual number of jobs created.

O'Brien: Five women to watch

When I put together a list of the 10 most powerful women in Silicon Valley that the Mercury News published last weekend, there was inevitably a number of successful women whom I didn't include.

But of those who didn't make the cut, there were five names that came up repeatedly in my conversations and research that I found particularly intriguing. They're interesting not because of the power they wield today, but for the influence they might have tomorrow. Their careers, and their stars, are still ascending.

With that in mind, here are five women to watch in the coming years:

1. Mitchell Baker, 53, chairwoman of the Mozilla Foundation: This nonprofit oversees the for-profit Mozilla Corporation that manages development of Firefox, the Web's hottest browser.

Baker was hired as a lawyer in the early days of Netscape Communications. The company was later sold to AOL when it began winding down its browser business in 2003. She helped rescue the browser's source code by creating the Mozilla Foundation, which led to the development of the Firefox browser.

Baker became one of the world's leading advocates of the open software movement. The growing prominence of Firefox means she's having more impact on technology discussions around the globe.

2. Aileen Lee, 40, partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers: This former Gap executive and entrepreneur has

been at Kleiner since 1999, handling consumer-oriented digital investments. Although Kleiner's ranks of female partners has begun to grow recently, for a long time Lee was one of the few at the firm.

During her tenure, her work with a number of startups such as TellMe (bought by Microsoft) and Good Technology (bought by Motorola) earned her a strong reputation. But her profile is getting another bump now that she's going to be one of the Kleiner partners working on its new $250 million sFund, focused on social applications and services.

3. Anne Wojcicki, 37, co-founder of 23andme: She's got an impressive résumé that includes a decade in health care investment and starting this personal genetics testing company. Her work in this field has made her a notable leader in the push toward more personalized medicine.

While she's someone to watch in her own right, Wojcicki also is married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin. And her sister, Susan, is a Google executive who rented her garage to the Google founders way back when they were just getting started.

4. Leila Chirayath Janah, 28, founder and CEO, Samasource: This nonprofit acts as a kind of broker between companies that need low-level digital work done and people in developing companies to make sure the work is equitable and the wages fair.

Her road to Samasource stretches back more than a decade when she volunteered as a teacher in rural Ghana while in junior high school. Later, Janah cooked up the idea for Samasource while working as a consultant.

Janah has become an influential social entrepreneur by pointing the way toward how globalization can be more humane and dignified.

5. Ann Miura-Ko, 34, co-founder of super angel fund Floodgate: Last year, Mike Maples announced he was re-forming his investment fund as "Floodgate" with Miura-Ko as co-founder. Maples is a well-known valley investor. But the announcement vaulted the lesser known Miura-Ko into the spotlight.

On LinkedIn, she lists her title with Floodgate as "Investing Ninja Assassin" and she can boast of a Ph.D. in "quantitative modeling of computer security." While leading investments for Floodgate, she's still teaching entrepreneurship classes at Stanford University.

But with investments in companies such as Twitter, Gowalla and Formspring, Miura-Ko and Floodgate are already making a big splash.

Nintendo 3DS to cost $250, out March 27 in US

NEW YORK -- Promising to usher in a new era in 3-D entertainment, Nintendo says its glasses-free handheld 3DS will go on sale March 27 in the U.S. for $250. That's the same price that the revolutionary Wii console cost when it went on sale in 2006.

The president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime, said Wednesday the 3DS is a "truly unique experience that doesn't exist anywhere else."

"This is a different kind of 3-D. Something you haven't experienced before. Not in theaters, not at trade shows." Fils-Aime told a crowd of journalists, bloggers and analysts in New York City. "Of course, there are no glasses."

The gadget features a touch screen on the bottom and a 3-D screen on top. It has three cameras, one facing the user and two facing outward. The latter two let you take 3-D photos, which can be instantly displayed on the screen. There's also an accelerometer and a gyroscope, which track players' movements and how they tilt the screen, so that they can see the 3-D games from different angles.

A "Mii Creator" uses photos you take of yourself to instantly create a cartoon avatar based on your image. Then you can adjust it as you like.

The 3DS includes new social features, including "StreetPass," which lets users exchange game information with other 3DS users nearby. For example, your Mii avatar or game high scores can appear on your friend's 3DS if they have also chosen to activate this

feature.

Nintendo said more than 30 games will be available for the 3DS by early June. Games will range from "Nintendogs + Cats," which adds feline companions to the popular puppy simulator to "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D" to 3-D versions of EA's Madden NFL Football" and Capcom's "Resident Evil: The Mercenaries." Older games, including those for the original Game Boy, will be available for download.

The 3DS will be available in black and shiny aqua blue. It can play games from older DS systems, but they just won't be in 3-D. The 3-D gradient is adjustable on the 3DS, or it can be turned off completely. If your eyes don't adjust to the 3-D screen immediately, it helps to start out the games in 2-D mode and then slowly turn up the 3-D slider.

Nintendo recommends that children age 6 or younger should not play 3-D games because it could affect the development of their vision, similar to warnings issued by makers of other 3-D products.

But the American Academy of Ophthalmology says there are currently no conclusive studies on the short- or long-term effects of 3-D products on children's eye development or vision health. At the same time, if a healthy child develops headaches or can't see 3-D images, this could be a sign of an eye disorder, the group said in a statement this week.

Apple reports record-breaking revenues and profits

A day after Apple CEO Steve Jobs jolted the tech world by announcing his third medical leave, the company reported record-breaking revenue and profit for the holiday season.

Apple on Tuesday posted $6 billion in profit and sales of $26.7 billion in the first quarter, which ended Dec. 25. Profit grew a remarkable 78 percent from the same quarter a year ago, while sales, which tend to increase much more slowly than profit, jumped an even more astonishing 71 percent.

By comparison, even fast-growing Google reported its profit grew 32 percent and sales increased 23 percent in its most recent quarter; Apple's results would be spectacular even for a startup a fraction of its size.

"It's in a category of its

own," Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall said. "This is uncharted territory. There are other companies their size -- HP, IBM -- but they are not growing at 60 percent annually. IBM and HP grew mid-single digits last year whereas Apple grew over 60 percent. It's pretty phenomenal." Above expectations

Apple results far exceeded the expectations of Wall Street analysts, who had anticipated earnings of $5.40 a share on revenue of $24.4 billion for the first quarter.

The highlights of the quarter included: 4.13 million Macintosh computers sold, a 23 percent increase over the year-ago quarter; 16.24 million iPhones sold, an 86 percent jump; and 7.33 million iPads sold.

"It was a

stunner; I mean, they blew out every single number," Needham analyst Charlie Wolf said. "It was just amazing."

"We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales," Jobs said in a statement. "We are firing on all cylinders and we've got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon, which customers can't wait to get their hands on."

The robust financial numbers for the first quarter softened the blow of Monday's news that Jobs, 55, who has battled pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant in 2009, would step away from day-to-day operations of Apple for an undetermined time. Jobs, though, said he would remain involved with the company on major strategy.

In a conference call with analysts, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, overseeing day-to-day operations while Jobs is on medical leave, brushed off a question about how far out Apple plans its product strategy -- a key concern for many investors imagining Apple without Jobs at the helm some day. Many observers estimate that Jobs' influence on the company's direction and future products extends out two years or so.

"That's part of the magic of Apple," Cook said. "I don't want to let anybody know our magic because I don't want anybody copying it."

Cook tried to instill confidence in investors with Apple's management. "The team here has an unparalleled breadth and depth of talent and a culture of innovation that Steve has driven into the company, and excellence has become a habit," he said.

Apple executives, though, did not address the most pressing question facing the Cupertino company: the health of Jobs, who did not disclose the reason for his medical leave.

With or without Jobs, the company has lost none of its swagger.

"We are not sitting still," Cook said of the iPad, which is expected to face a lot of new competition this year. "We have an incredible first-mover advantage. We have a large number of apps and a huge ecosystem. We are very, very confident about entering into a fight with anyone."

Last year, Apple executives indicated there was a chance the iPad could eat into sales of the company's MacBook laptop business. But after posting the highest quarterly sales of Macs ever, Cook dismissed fears of cannibalization of the company's traditional computing business.

Investors, confident in the Cupertino company at least for the medium-term, responded with relative calm to the latest turn in Jobs' health. Shares of Apple fell more that 4 percent at the open of the markets Tuesday but rebounded as the day progressed, closing 2.25 percent down to $340.65. Shares of Apple nudged up 1.3 percent in after-hours trading, to $345.02

Growing confidence

Not only have investors come to accept the questions around Jobs' medical status, they also have growing confidence in the company's ability to continue to execute exceptionally well, with or without the co-founder sitting in the CEO's office, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said.

"Investors are pretty objective about this," he said. "As long as they keep putting up numbers like they have, the stock is going to work. It's going to be a great investment."

For the current quarter, the normally conservative Apple forecasts earnings per share of $4.90 on revenue of $22 billion -- more than the consensus of analysts, who predict earnings per share of $4.47 on revenue of $20.7 billion, according to Thomson One Analytics.

The unusually aggressive guidance is tied to Apple's release of the iPhone on Verizon's network beginning early next month.

"It's all about the Verizon iPhone," Wu said. "There is a lot of pent-up demand. It's like Christmas in March."

Google appeals Spain's demand to take down links

MADRID -- Lawyers for Google went to court Wednesday in Madrid to appeal demands by Spanish authorities that the company delete links to websites containing information officials say violates Spaniards' privacy rights.

Google says it's the first case of its kind -- and a Spanish decision mandating the deletion of the links could hurt freedom of expression.

Spain's Data Protection Agency said it filed the orders against Google at the request of individuals who lodged complaints and because the original publishers of the material cannot legally be ordered to take them down.

The agency has issued 90 orders for Google to take down links. The National Court on Wednesday heard arguments from both sides on the first five orders to be appealed.

The cases include a surgeon who was absolved of charges of criminal negligence in a 1991 case but who sees a Spanish newspaper reference to the original case -- and not the acquittal -- whenever his name is keyed into Google's search engine.

Another case involved a woman who was denied a local government grant years ago but reference to the case and data about her keeps appearing in searches using her name.

Google's chief argument is that it is just an intermediary and that the original publishers are responsible for the content.

Google fears that a ruling against by the court would effectively give the U.S. search engine giant publisher status and make it accountable for the

material it provides on the Internet.

"We are disappointed by the actions of the Spanish privacy regulator. Spanish and European law rightly hold the publisher of material responsible for its content," Peter Barron, Director of External Relations for Google, said prior to the hearing.

"Requiring intermediaries like search engines to censor material published by others would have a profound chilling effect on free expression without protecting people's privacy," he said.

The five cases involved information published in newspapers or official gazettes.

Jose Antonio Perales, a lawyer for the data protection agency, said each of the five individuals claimed their dignity and privacy were affected by the fact that references to past events involving them continued to appear in Internet searches.

"We face a violation of fundamental rights," said Gabriel Gomez, a lawyer acting on behalf of the surgeon. "The Internet can't be a refuge for insults, threats or offenses."

But lawyers for Google pointed out that the data agency had not called on any of the news providers to modify or remove their content. They argued there are Internet tools available so that newspapers could block search engines from indexing certain material.

They also pointed out that Google had blocked information when it was shown to be criminal, such as child pornography sites.

"All the sentences (in other countries) under which Google has de-indexed pages are sentences which declared the content illegal," said Google lawyer Javier Aparicio, arguing that the material concerned in the Spanish cases was not illegal.

A ruling by the National Court could take weeks, even months.

The case is the latest legal wrangle involving Google. Google's street mapping program has been dogged by privacy concerns in Europe since its launch, and authorities across the world have mounted probes into the tech company's practices.

There has been an ongoing debate over online privacy and the so-called "right to be forgotten." European Union officials have been looking for ways to allow citizens to delete information about themselves that they do not wish to appear on the Internet.

2 charged with stealing iPad users' information

NEWARK, N.J. -- Two men who authorities say were competing to impress their fellow hackers were arrested Tuesday on federal charges they stole the e-mail addresses of more than 100,000 Apple iPad users, including politicians and media personalities.

The theft and the AT&T security weakness that made it possible were revealed months ago, and U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said there was no evidence the men used the swiped information for criminal purposes. Authorities cautioned, however, that it could theoretically have wound up in the hands of spammers and scam artists.

Daniel Spitler, a 26-year-old bookstore security guard from San Francisco, and Andrew Auernheimer, 25, of Fayetteville, Ark., were charged with fraud and conspiracy to access a computer without authorization.

Fishman said the men and their cohorts were engaged in "malicious one-upsmanship" as they sought to impress each other and others online.

"We don't tolerate committing crimes for street cred," Fishman said. "Computer hacking is not a competitive sport, and security breaches are not a game."

Spitler appeared in federal court in Newark and was released on $50,000 bail. A U.S. magistrate ordered him not to use the Internet except at his job at a Borders bookstore.

"I maintain my innocence and I'm not worried about this case at all," Spitler said outside court. "The information in the complaint is false. This case has been blown way out of proportion."

At Auernheimer's court appearance in Fayetteville -- where he also faces drug charges stemming from a search of his home in June -- he was ordered held pending a bail hearing Friday. He told a magistrate that he had been drinking until 6:30 a.m., and he mocked the case against him, telling federal officials in the courtroom, "This is a great affidavit -- fantastic reading."

The stolen e-mail addresses, on their own, aren't that valuable; many of them could easily have been guessed by knowing a person's name and how his or her organization structures its e-mail addresses.

But once they knew a person was an iPad owner and an AT&T customer, cybercriminals and spammers could have sent e-mails that looked like they came from Apple or AT&T, tricking the recipient into opening them.

Those e-mails could, in turn, plant malicious software on the recipient's computer or trick the person into sharing vital private information, such as Social Security or credit card numbers.

In June, AT&T acknowledged a security weak spot on a website that exposed the e-mail addresses of apparently more than 100,000 iPad users. The company said that the vulnerability affected only iPad users who signed up for AT&T's 3G wireless Internet service and that it had fixed the problem.

Apple's Steve Jobs likely stricken with one of two conditions, experts say

Medical experts say there are two likely reasons why patients such as Apple CEO Steve Jobs, with pancreatic cancer and a new liver, need time off: complications from the transplant or recurrence of the tumor.

In announcing his indefinite medical leave from Apple, Jobs offered no details about his condition. But his gaunt appearance and cryptic message, which offered no return date, has triggered worried speculation.

Doctors reiterated that Jobs' rare type of disease, called neuroendocrine cancer, is known to be slow-growing and even treatable. And complications related to liver transplants, such as infection and duct blockage, can often be fixed. But both pose substantial lifelong risk.

"The worst thing, in our mind, would be recurrence of the tumor," said Dr. Simon Lo, director of the pancreatic disease program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, who has not treated Jobs and has no direct information about his diagnosis.

"But even if it recurs, it could be slow in progressing," he added.

There is relatively little data on long-term survival of patients such as Jobs, but statistics suggest that about half of patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancers who receive liver transplants live for five years. Individual outcomes may vary, based on the subtype of tumor.

"Those are pretty good odds," said Lo.

In 2004, Jobs disclosed that he had been diagnosed with this rare form of pancreatic cancer and

had been treated with surgery -- and told he was cured.

Five years later, he had his liver removed and received a transplant, indicating that the cancer had metastasized. The liver is the most common place for pancreatic cancers to spread, because blood flows from one organ to the other.

According to a report by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill abdominal transplant surgeon David Gerber, liver metastases are the main cause of death for patients with this type of cancer -- so a transplant can significantly prolong survival.

But transplants pose their own risks, particularly with cancer patients.

That's because the immunosuppressant drugs needed to prevent rejection make the body less able to fend off infections or new malignancies.

Moreover, if any tiny pockets of cancer cells remain, hidden, the introduction of these immunosuppressant drugs can cause them to flare up, Dr. Anthony Heaney, an endocrinologist at UCLA's Ronald Reagan Medical Center, told The Los Angeles Times. So transplants are performed only if doctors believe the cancer is completely gone.

Fortunately, drug treatment is generally not as rigorous for liver patients as it is for patients receiving other organs. Some liver transplant patients can even be safely weaned off medicines, according to longtime transplant surgeon Oscar Salvatierra of Stanford University's School of Medicine.

Yet other postsurgical transplant problems may be encountered, said Lo, such as blockage of a duct. That happens when the liver is removed; scar tissue may form and prevent bile from flowing properly. Surgery can also cause adhesions, or "kinks," in the digestive system.

And there is always the risk that the organ will be rejected, although that recedes with time. There are few reported cases of cancer patients who receive second livers after the first one is rejected.

Finally, patients who have lost their pancreas may have hormonal problems, altering how the body secretes substances like insulin.

If a tumor has reappeared in a different part of the body -- typically, the abdomen -- it can be treated with surgery, particularly if it is localized and large, according to Lo and Dr. Waldo Concepcion, a Stanford University transplant expert. In this circumstance, levels of immunosuppressant drugs would be adjusted. And a new medicine would be introduced, to attack the malignant cells.

"The whole idea is to control the spread," said Lo.

Verizon Wireless to unveil iPhone Tuesday: source

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Verizon Wireless, the top U.S. mobile provider, plans on Tuesday to unveil a version of the Apple Inc iPhone for its service and will kick off sales of the device a few weeks later, a source told Reuters.

Verizon Wireless will offer the iPhone to its customers under its existing wireless service price plans, said the source, who asked not to be named as the plan has not yet been announced.

Apple and Verizon Wireless declined comment on Saturday.

Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, will announce pricing for the device at an event to be held in New York on Tuesday.

The agreement between Verizon Wireless and Apple marks the end of AT&T's iPhone exclusivity. AT&T Inc, the No. 2 U.S. mobile service, has been the only operator to sell iPhone since it launched in 2007.

Since AT&T has been heavily dependent on iPhone for customer growth in the last few years, some investors have worried that it could face a mass exodus of subscribers once its bigger rival starts selling iPhone.

AT&T's reputation for network performance problems, particularly in cities such as New York and San Francisco, could exacerbate the problem.

But some analysts have said that the loss of customers will be tempered by the fact that most of AT&T's iPhone customers subscribe via family plans, which are trickier to exit as they involve more than one customer.

Olympus updates PEN lineup and shows off new series

A look at what's to come from Olympus.

We were able to get a private demo of Olympus’ new cameras at CES, and the manufacturer hit all the hyped features of the year while also bringing some professional quality cameras to the table. Here’s a first look at Olympus’ new X-series as well as additions its made to current models.

Olympus showed us the latest member of the EPL family with the EPL2, as well as a larger-bodied any more professional DSLR SP610. The EPL2, like its predecessor, comes in a stylish package, but the body design is better suited for hand held use. It features larger front grip as well as an updated back paneling for easier one-hand shooting. The power and shoot buttons have also been modified to prevent accidental photos or unintentionally turning the camera off. Keeping up with its competitors, Olympus has also introduced a 3-inch LCD display screen.

The camera’s built-in filters have also been updated, included a more dramatic HDR imaging editor. You are also able to alter the degree of each filter, offering a more thorough in-camera editing process. It will retail for $599.99 and hits shelves at the end of the month.

We’re pretty excited about the PEN series update, but an entirely new addition for Olympus is its new X-series. It’s flagship camera, the XZ-1, is meant to appeal to professional shooters who wants a handheld device without sacrificing quality. And Olympus might be able to pull that off by including an iZUIKO lens (which is remarkably bright and fast) in the XZ-1, the first and thus far only compact digital camera with one. The XZ-1 also includes various auto-settings and filters for various skill levels. Higher-end digital camera developers have really delivered on the compact professional and DSLR end this year, and no doubt will continue with coming releases. It’s a great middle ground between beginner’s pocket cams and big-bodied DSLRs, and will cost you $499.99 and is also available at the end of the month.

Olympus hits just about every gimmicky camera trend we’ve seen this year with its TG-310 and TG-610). Still, they fill that niche and throw out a competitor model for other digital action cams. Olympus has added a 3D mode to the camera, which uses the two-shot technology to produce the images, new in-camera effects and filters, auto-focus tracking, and eye-Fi card compatibility for immediate, wireless uploading. The TG-310 and TG-610 are also now 14 megapixel cameras and can withstand more rough-housing than the previous generation. Our exhibitor also mentioned the cameras can shoot 3D underwater, something many rival 3D digital cameras haven’t offered yet. The TG-310 retails for $199.99 and the TG-610 for $299.99 in February.

Introducing the S-series

Olympus also introduced a lightweight, full-featured DSLR, the SP-610UZ. We’d best describe this as a highly capable family camera: intermediary photographers looking for the next step might want to reach a little higher, but it’s still a quality machine that doesn’t have a steep learning curve or require a giant bag to lug its bits around. It also includes the previously mentioned built-in filters, an HDMI port, and 3D mode. All useful and fun options, but it’s really the SP-610UZ’s 22x optical zoom and 14 megapixels image sensor that will give you high caliber photos without being a huge investment: it’s only $229.99 and will be available in February.

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - It was easier to find a tablet this week in Las Vegas than a taxi.

Rivals determined to prevent Apple Inc from dominating the tablet market the way it did with digital music players unleashed a tidal wave of touchscreen devices at the Consumer Electronics Show.

This year may well produce a viable competitor to Apple's iPad. But CES only served to underscore the challenge they face.

Of the slew of tablets on view at CES, devices from Motorola and Research in Motion were standouts. But none rose to iPad-killer status, analysts said. Some, lazier vendors seemed to use the show as a whiteboard to sketch out half-baked ideas.

Rich Beyer, chief executive of Freescale Semiconductor, which makes chips for tablets, said in an interview ahead of CES that Apple's rivals are still testing the market.

"I think a lot of people are hoping that this market is not going to be like Apple and the MP3 market."

Rivals are already playing catch-up, after Apple moved assertively to define the tablet market, sacrificing its precious margin profile to price the iPad at $500.

There is undoubtedly an opportunity for other tablets, particularly with different screen sizes and in the corporate market, where Apple has not traditionally been very successful. And the sheer ubiquity of tablets based on Google's Android software makes that the platform that Apple cannot ignore.

The tablet segment is expected to more than triple to 50 million units in 2011, with Apple seen as by far the dominant vendor.

Despite Apple's big head start, no one expects its competitors to stay away. Sony Corp said it hopes to become the world's second-largest vendor of tablet devices by 2012, but failed to show anything.

Paul-Henri Ferrand, head of consumer marketing for Dell, said: "Apple can't expect to have the tablet market to itself."

CORPORATE DEMAND

A host of manufacturers are producing tablets based on Android, which is free to license. But Android tablets will face the added challenge of not only competing against the iPad, but also one another.

"Android will be a key player in the tablet market but it will be hard for any single vendor to challenge Apple," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

Lenovo, LG Electronics and Asustek Computer were just a few of the companies showing off Android tablets at CES.

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Nvidia Chief Executive Jen-Hsun Huang learned firsthand how pervasive -- and demanding -- mobile devices can be.

When he tried to demonstrate a tablet computer at the Consumer Electronics Show on Wednesday, so many people in the audience had their devices connected to the Web that the network collapsed and his presentation short-circuited after a few minutes.

"You guys suck," he said.

Huang's widely discussed crack betrayed a private sentiment shared by some of technology's old guard, who face the painful task of reinvention as the mobile Internet eclipses the personal computer's role in everything from work to leisure.

The Consumer Electronics Association estimates that 70 percent of all gadgets -- TVs, tablets, phones, even gaming handhelds and printers -- will boast an Internet connection by 2014, from virtually none just a few years ago.

That trend signal a shift in the tech balance of power from the so-called Wintel hegemony and the PC makers like Dell Inc that thrive off it, to smaller but booming companies like chip designer ARM Holdings and Netflix.

Consider: Microsoft made the biggest splash, not by unveiling some stunning new PC or software -- its bread and butter -- but by stepping away from its decades-old alliance with Intel Corp as part of a concerted move into mobile devices, backed by its support for ARM processors.

Sony Corp talked up its VAIO PC line, but the headlines leaped at an executive's bold claim that it will be No. 2 in tablets by 2012 -- bold because the erstwhile king of consumer electronics has lagged fleeter-footed rivals like Samsung Electronics for years.

"Windows PCs will continue to adapt and evolve," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at the show's opening keynote speech, but his company's predicament was illustrated by the range of half-built machines, guts all on show, which Microsoft hastily assembled to demonstrate the new ARM capability.

CONNECTED CONTENT

Ballmer's boot-strapped demo was a far cry from Apple Inc's slick product rollouts. The iPad inventor and de facto creator of the tablet market kickstarted a trend in people getting access to "the cloud" anytime, anywhere, with its iPhone, and now the tablet, which could ship 36.5 million units in 2011, according to research firm iSuppli.

Although not on the show floor, Apple's presence loomed large. More than 30 tablets were announced over 48 hours, with virtually all -- from Sony to Asustek Inc, mentioning Apple as the one to catch.

All those connected devices require two things to prosper: a blazing fast Web connection and content. The former's absence on and off the tradeshow floor made itself known as emails went unsent, Web pages remained unvisited and stage presentations went awry.

At CES, all the major U.S. carriers boasted that they are upgrading their networks, spending billions of dollars in the process, to fourth-generation and faster technology. Verizon Wireless said it will carry 10 new 4G devices in the first half.

Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc and T-Mobile USA jostled to show that they were in the best position to get people to use their highest-speed wireless data services, setting the scene for bitter rivalry this year.

FCC eyes broadcast spectrum auction as soon as 2012

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - The U.S. government could put more wireless airwaves on the market as early as a year from now if lawmakers give the country's telecom regulator authority to give broadcasters part of the proceeds.

Federal Communications Chairman Julius Genachowski is looking for broadcasters such as CBS Corp to voluntarily give up airwaves they don't need in exchange for a portion of revenue from selling the spectrum.

The idea is to make more airwaves available for wireless broadband services to prevent network congestion amid exploding demand for services such as mobile Web surfing. But in order to go ahead with the plan Genachowski needs approval from Congress.

"We could be in a position, if Congress acts, to put the spectrum up for auction in the next year or two," Genachowski said at an event at the Consumer Electronics Show on Friday.

"We'd be prepared to move quickly if Congress passes the law," the regulator said.

Aside from meeting expanding demand for such services, Genachowski also said he is worried about the United States losing its leadership role in the development of wireless technologies and services.

"Global leadership is not a given in the 21st century," he said.

The Obama administration in June endorsed a target of making 500 megahertz of spectrum available over the next 10 years to meet the growing demand for wireless services on laptops and smartphones such as Apple Inc's iPhone.

The FCC, which manages commercial spectrum licenses, and the Commerce Department, which oversees government spectrum, have been working together to locate unused spectrum.

The Commerce Department in November identified 115 megahertz of spectrum that could be reallocated to wireless broadband, and the FCC hopes to repurpose 120 megahertz of spectrum from television stations through voluntary incentive auctions.

Hands on with JVC’s full HD 3D camcorder

JVC showed off its new full HD 3D camcorder at CES and another model that records 2D images and converts them to 3D using software. Pictures and impressions inside.

If you’re an amateur filmmaker, but plain old 2D just ain’t doing the trick anymore, you might want to check out JVC’s new full HD 3D camcorder. We got a chance to check it out at JVC’s booth at CES and it was pretty impressive. To create full 3D images, the camera mimics the human eyes to some degree, using two full HD camera lenses to record slightly differing images of the same object simultaneously.

Though we’ve seen quite a few 3D camcorders at this year’s show, JVC claims this is the first to truly record in HD 3D. We’ve seen fully-3D camcorders from Panasonic, but perhaps the claim has merit. Judging by the results, JVC definitely knows its 3D. The live 3D demonstration (using passive glasses) at the show had more depth than we’ve seen in any other 3D demo at the show so far–more than any 3D TV or camcorder. This is likely due to the settings being maxed out, but it showed that the device is indeed recording professional quality 3D images.

The GS-TD1, as it’s called, also offers a side-by-side shooting format for 3D shooting and a 2D mode as well. It has an automatic axis stabilization system to give depth to the 3D images and JVC’s Biphonic technology, which is a buzz word for a type of surround sound. You can also adjust the depth of the 3D effect. The “world’s first” 3D camcorder hits shelves in March for about $2000.

JVC showed off one more 3D-capable camera, the HD Everio HZ-HM960. It won’t win any naming contests, but the HM960 is capable of recording 2D images and converting them to a form of 3D. You can view the 3D images right on the camera too. It has a glasses-free 3D display built into it. We did not get a chance to demo the 3D on this device, but other 2D-to-3D camcorders from companies like Sony offered very limited 3D (just about an inch or two of depth, it looked like). The GZ-HM960 will be available in February for about $950.

Garmin gave us a quick rundown of its new products at CES this year including a new iPhone app and updated screen sizes.

A couple nights ago, we caught up with Garmin at the CES Digital Experience event and representatives were kind enough to show us the four new products the GPS company is showing off at the show. Most notably, the comapny is beginning to move away from its physical products, as they showed us the first iteration of their new iPhone app, available for a one-time payment of about $40 in the Apple App Store. In addition, a 5-inch version of the Nuvi 2400 series and Dezl (get it?), a new GPS unit specifically designed for giant semi trucks, is hitting stores soon.

Toshiba’s 3D laptop uses webcam to track eyes, eliminates glasses

A built-in webcam coupled with eye-tracking software allows Toshiba’s latest 3D laptop to create glasses-free 3D on the fly.

Following the anti-glasses backlash from involuntarily bespectacled 3D TV viewers everywhere, glasses-free TVs are riding the angst and taking CES 2011 by storm. While most companies at the show use the same parallax barrier technology, which spits out a number of fixed 3D “zones” around the TV, Toshiba has taken a different tack with its latest 3D laptop, which actually uses a webcam intelligently target the 3D effect on the fly. We lent our eyes to see how this seemingly novel concept works in the real world.

Toshiba had the demo set up on a Qosmio notebook, but the production version due out later this year could be on any Toshiba notebook (a Qosmio, though, is likely, according to our rep). As you approach the screen, the notebook’s tracking technology locks onto your eyes in a matter of seconds – even with glasses on. As they catch your eyes, the diverging images on the screen suddenly converge and form a 3D image, though a pretty poor one from a quality standpoint. Objects had a very watery, ethereal feel, and toward the edges of the screen, very thin objects like trees seemed to break apart and lose the cohesive 3D feel. This isn’t a final product, but there’s no question that it lacks the quality of displays that use active or passive glasses.

A demo screen on the notebook showed us a monochrome version of the webcam feed, with yellow boxes creepily overlaid on the eyes being tracked. While the software managed to plot them accurately, an obvious processing delay causes the boxes to visibly lag behind the face when you move around, and the 3D picture distorts accordingly. Even the smallest wag of your head throws causes the picture to momentarily lapse out of 3D while the system adjusts. It’s quick, but nowhere near the instant speeds it would need to create truly uninterrupted viewing.

What eye-tracking 3D lacks in quality and comfort (locking your head in front of the screen for a 30-minute show wouldn’t really fly), it makes up in convenience. The final production model should be able to flick it on and off at a moment’s notice, which could make it practical, at the very least, for viewing 3D photographs and movie trailers without digging out a pair of glasses. Still, the less-than-dazzling picture quality and delayed head tracking will need to be resolved before this technology grows legs that will carry it beyond early adopters.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Verizon Wireless will sell the iPhone, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

There was no specific date for when Verizon would sell the phone in its stores, the paper reported on its website. The announcement will be made on Tuesday at an event in New York, WSJ said.

Verizon declined to comment. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

Shares of Verizon rose 2.5 percent in after-hours trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Apple shares rose 0.6 percent in after-hours trading on the Nasdaq.

Verizon, Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, delivered cryptic nontransferable invitations on Friday to an event to Tuesday's New York event.

The in-box invite to journalists was skimpy on details: "Join us as we share the latest news from Verizon Wireless."

AT&T Inc is currently the exclusive carrier of the iPhone.

On January 6, AT&T announced it will cut the price of its older iPhone model, the 3GS, to $49 from $99.

Apple's iPad is available through Verizon.

Earlier this week at the Consumer Electronics Show, the annual gadget extravaganza in Las Vegas, Verizon Wireless said it plans to have 10 new devices -- including four smartphones and new tablets -- on store shelves by midyear for its high speed wireless data service.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has confirmed that Kinect will come to PCs in a matter of time. The news comes from CES as the company expands the role of Kinect in the Xbox 360.

With all of the Xbox Kinect modding going on and Microsoft’s new menu-gesture updates to Kinect for Xbox, we’ve been wondering if Microsoft has any plans to open the Kinect motion camera up to PCs and other devices. Until now, the answer has been “no comment.” For the last two days, I’ve been asking Microsoft executives and employees at CES if they knew anything about this and the answer has always been, that it sounds like a cool idea but there are no plans at this time. Well, the BBC finally got a confirmation from the big man himself, CEO Steve Ballmer.

When asked by the BBC if the company has any plans to bring Kinect to PCs, Ballmer said it will happen, in time. “We’ll support that in a formal way at the right time and when we have an announcement to make, we’ll make it.”

Ballmer also spoke a bit about where Kinect is already heading: “Well we certainly started it out with Xbox, very focused in on gaming and we’re the number one game console in a lot of countries and at this stage we’re very happy about that. We’re trying to do two major things though: we’re trying to move beyond gaming to include the world of socialization, movies, TV, music, and we’re trying to make the whole experience accessible to everybody in the family, not just the traditional gamer.”

Do you want to make motion gestures or speak to play games and navigate menus on your PC or other products? Microsoft is certainly trying something new with Kinect. It will be interesting how they capitalize on the buzz from here.

A complete guide to the Motorola Atrix, a phone + laptop

We go in-depth with the Motorola Atrix phone and laptop docking peripheral at CES. It's one of our favorite new products of the show. Check it out!

CES has been full of tablet PCs and 3D devices, but few of them really stand out or solve a problem. Will TV shows like The Office truly get more exciting with a foot of depth added to them? I’m not so sure. With the Atrix, however, Motorola has gone and invented a new product entirely, one that is both exciting and potentially useful.

The Atrix is really two devices: It’s a high-end dual-core 4G Android phone, and it’s a laptop computer. By snapping the phone into the back of a new laptop dock, it powers a full-size screen and keyboard with a modified Android (Linux) display made to resemble a desktop computer.

First, the phone. For a phone to also run a laptop, one needs some horsepower. From what we saw, the Atrix has some impressive specs. The Android 2.2 device is powered by Nvidia’s 1GHz Tegra 2 AP20H dual-core processor (one of the first dual-core phones) and has an impressive 1 GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, a powerful 1930 mAh battery, a 540×960 4-inch multitouch screen with gorilla glass (scratch and shatter resistant), a VGA front-facing camera, a 5MP rear camera that can record 720p video, and a proximity sensor for auto-turn-off.

The shot above shows another unique feature of the Atrix: it’s biometric fingerprint reader. The power button on the top rear of the unit doubles as the sensor, meaning that if someone that isn’t you tries to turn on your phone, it just won’t work. It would be a good security feature for those of you who (like me) tend to accidentally leave your phone in Las Vegas cabs when attending CES conventions.

The Atrix is also capable of 4G speeds, but is only being sold on AT&T in the United States, which may hurt its potential, considering the vitriol some have toward AT&T’s network and the success Motorola has had with its Android devices on Verizon Wireless. Verizon recently launched its own 4G network, but Motorola’s Atrix was not one of the 10 new 4G devices announced. The 4G Droid Bionic will launch on Verizon.

Motorola has been pushing its docking solutions since the original Droid launched on Verizon more than a year ago. Like the original Droid, the Atrix will have have a Navigation dock for autos and a clock stand. However, the company is now introducing a new dock that effectively turns the Atrix into a thin laptop that resembles a Macbook Air. The peripheral is little more than a 15 (or so) inch screen and island-style keyboard with a built-in 8-10 hour battery. The phone connects via Micro USB and Micro HDMI connections on the side of the phone.

When docked into the rear of the laptop shell, the Atrix is charged by the dock and powers the device. Though the resolution seemed somewhat low, a split screen on the laptop shows the phone display and has space for some app shortcuts along the bottom (similar to Mac OS X) and app windows in the screen. Motorola is calling this the “Webtop” display mode. This form-factor is a Motorola modification of the standard Android OS, or may be powered separately by a Moto version of Linux. Our unit had shortcuts to a folder/directory navigator for browsing files, QuickOffice, and Mozilla Firefox. A big make-or-break for the Atrix will be how many other apps are available for the desktop client, how usable they are, and how easy they are to obtain. As it stands, the device appeared to be fairly competent as a Web browser and seemed good for most netbook-like light applications and uses.

Using the clock dock, the Atrix also has a desktop mode, for those hoping to plug the phone into a full monitor and keyboard (picture). The desktop version works identically to the laptop UI, from what we can tell.

Motorola representatives told us that when you undock your phone, it will suspend and hold all of your desktop apps and browser windows until you reconnect, making it possible to undock and redock without having to start your work over. If the phone is turned off between dockings, the apps will have to restart, but the Atrix will save your browser windows and docs before shutting off.

The unit also has some interesting multitasking features. Since the phone still has a window inside of the Webtop display, you can make calls using the speakerphone or a bluetooth headset, and do almost anything else you normally do on your phone. You can also open up Android apps and run them in full-screen. I’d imagine if the Atrix gets Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) at some point, most apps will already have a widescreen tablet display mode to them, making a unit like this all the more usable. With a button click, you can swap between open Webtop and phone applications on the fly (seen above).

No modern consumer product would be complete without a custom, odd looking media player, and the Atrix is no exception. A pretty looking series of domino-ish icons let you experience any pictures video, and music available on the device. We watched some sample videos on the device, which rendered quickly and looked great.

The Atrix is a great first attempt at merging the worlds of PC and smartphones. Unlike tablets, which are better suited as consumption devices, the Atrix should appeal to those who still need or prefer a full keyboard and mouse to create content. With a built-in charger and long battery life, it will also be a great device for long flights and those on the go. The dock is fairly thin and well-built with what appears to be an aluminum shell and solid island-style keyboard.

The question is, will consumers embrace a new desktop interface? Though Android has taken off, the desktop world is still owned by Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Like Google Chrome, Motorola is attempting to introduce a new operating system into a very mature market. If applications aren’t easy to find and download and the platform isn’t open enough, it will likely be rejected after the “wow” factor wears off.

The other looming question is how much it will cost. If the phone already costs between $200 and $300 with a 2-year AT&T contract, how much will the extra dock cost? If it’s much more than $100, I can’t imagine it becoming a mainstream success. Low-end laptops and netbooks cost about $400 and up. If Motorola can’t beat or get close to that price, it’s hard to see many consumers choosing the Atrix as a desktop solution. There’s also the problem of bandwidth. It’s already easy to blow through AT&T’s $25 2GB data plan and with a full desktop client, many users will constantly encounter overages. Hopefully AT&T will address this and adapt plans, especially on its 4G network.

Still, the Atrix is my favorite new product out of CES so far. It has the potential to be a game-changing product and if it succeeds, we could see some very cool updates in the years to come. Hopefully Motorola will fully support the device.
